The short story can take many forms and this is amply illustrated in this very special anthology which celebrates the variety and the high quality of contemporary writing in Ulster.

This is a highly enjoyable collection of 28 authors, both young and old, from every corner of the province. Between the covers of this volume we are presented with a masterclass in the diversity of the genre. Stories of love, of revenge, of hope. Stories that make us laugh out loud. Stories that make us cry. Some of these stories are firmly rooted in oral traditions that span centuries, others very proudly display the stamp of contemporary ways of story-weaving. No matter where readers may dive in throughout this very considerable collection, they will find worlds that awaken their interest and entice their imagination.

Visit www.blath.ie to hear the stories in a new podcast presented by Réaltán Ní Leannáin and to get a digital version of the text. A new story from the book will be podcasted each month.

Really Wanted to Love This Book
Format: Paperback
I grew up in a time where there were very few LBGTQ books and I felt very much an anomaly. I heard great things about this book and wanted to read it. I found the book to be written super simply and not adding much to the conversation. I am glad it exists but it was super simplistic and it really doesn’t add much to the conversations around transitioning. It might be a great book for a kid just starting to figure out who they are. I left this book in a free library in a public space in hopes it gets read by someone who needs the message.

Had me in happy tears🥹
Format: Paperback
Lewis is a really funny person and I love how he discussing the way transitioning can affect multiple people, like parents, friends, and teachers. I also feel very related to by this book despite not having the same experience he did. It’s a testament to his amazing writing that he can so well encapsulate the Transgender Experience, whilst still telling a personal story. Highly recommend.

Recommended it to others!
Format: Paperback
I discovered Lewis through TikTok and even showed a few of his videos to my mom. While I’m a bit younger than Lewis, my mom and I laughed at his videos because they reminded us of my emo teen self. While our journeys in life are hardly similar, and I still identify with my biological sex, I absolutely loved this book and told my therapist friend about it. She made a note to recommend it to some of her young clients going through their own trans journeys. Thank you Lewis for reminding me of my teenage emo escapades and making the world seem not-so-lonely for those struggling with their true selves. It’s needed today more than ever. ♥️
