artist biography
Amano Kazumi (尼野和三) was born in Takaoka City, Tôyama Prefecture in 1927. He graduated from the Takaoka High School of Industrial Art in 1945, specializing in furniture design. In 1950, Amano studied briefly under Munakata Shikô. By 1953, he was exhibiting at the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Print Association), and then moved to Tokyo in 1955. In 1968, Amano relocated to the United States, first working as a teacher at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois and Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa. In 1971, he moved his family to New York City, where he worked for 30 years.

Amano's early work showed Munakata's influence, but his later prints were very different, characterized by elegant, precision-cut abstractions featuring forms (sometimes embossed) balanced against empty space. His compositions are filled with shapes hinting at industrial or furniture design. Amano spoke in abstractions about his art, and is reported to have said that he was interested in "dynamic opposition and disorder," or the "constant metamorphosis" from "natural evolution."

Amano won prizes at international print biennales in Lugano (1964), Tokyo (1966), and Krakow (1968). His works are represented in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Toyama Modern Art Museum, Japan; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Cincinnati Art Museum; the New York Public Library; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Miami Museum; the Seattle Art Museum; the Stockholm National Museum; the Elvehjem Museum of Art, Madison, WI; and the Fine Arts Museums, San Francisco.

It works well but uncomfortable
Size: 80 ea
I take blood pressure pills that dry my mouth out. The inside of my lips feel burned from being so try overnight. It's uncomfortable. I discovered these tablets and thought I'd give them a shot. I am struggling with them. I don't have a large mouth and these have to sit inbetween your gums and your lip or cheek. They are bigger than I would like. Plus they kind of hurt my gums. You're supposed to put them in place, wait ten seconds so they stick and then there is no further instruction other than they work for several hours. Do we just leave them in place all night because the uncomfortability makes it so I can't sleep easy. I also wear a nightguard on my top teeth to keep me from grinding. I love Xylitol, I bought some to use in my coffee in the day time so that part is a great thing. I just can't get past how uncomfortable it is to have them fixated in your mouth all night. One last thing... you're supposed to put two in. I did that the first night and it was like... NOPE. I let them sit for 5 minutes like it says and then I just dissolved the rest in my mouth because no way could I leave them in place and sleep. The next night I just used one on my bottom gums. It was still uncomfortable. If they could make them smaller, it would be way easier. Other than that, the Xylitol does work and my mouth isn't nearly as try when I wake up in the morning.

Odd but surprisingly great
Size: 80 ea
These things are pretty weird. I had no idea what I was ordering when I ordered them. When they came, I didn't read the documentation and tried one like a normal breath mint. No no no. I set them aside for a few months -- until I read an article online in which dentists were interviewed and in which the dentists recommended products helpful for dental health. These things were mentioned in that list, so I dug them out and read the documentation. Oddly enough, each "melt" has an adhesive-like side that will keep it in place against your jaw (tucked out-of-the-way, between gum/teeth and cheek). And, it's gone -- there but forgotten. Lasts for hours (no kidding), slowly dissolving, keeping your mouth moist (like for speaking) and keeping your breath slightly "minty fresh" (I'm laughing at that expression.). And, apparently, there is a flouride-like dental benefit, but I haven't researched that. Anyway, I highly recommend these quite-strange "melts" (not mints but slightly minty).

Clear and powerful analysis.
Format: Paperback
The three books in Bowlby's trilogy on Attachment, Separation and Loss need to be read a whole. Using the studies and case histories of children being separated from their mothers and important others, in a wide range of circumstances from separations of only a few minutes, through separations of several weeks on up to prolonged and permanent separation due to divorce and death, Bowlby outlines a new way of understanding neurosis, psychosis and optimal, healthy functioning. Using the lens of a Darwinian analysis, and the case histories written up by psychoanalysts spanning decades, he compares and contrasts his new theory with that of previous psychological thought, especially the psychoanalytic tradition. I found his analysis penetrating and illuminating. It sets the stage and formulates the hypotheses for further research. Much of that research has now taken place and has borne out Bowlby's theories. Not all of it, of course. Because Bowlby's attachment theory became and continues to be such a foundational analysis for so much that has followed in its wake, from evolutionary psychology to child development to psychotherapy, it is a must read for anyone interested in these and related fields.

A briliant book
Format: Paperback
This book is very neat in its specifics about the effects of absence when a mother is not in a child's life and the roles and effects of mother figures as well. Myself dealing with abandonment issues from my mom and my mother figure in my life, this book really assists in identifying the issues caused from the absent parent. Though the book doesn't offer any real advice as to deal with these problems that arise, it identify's the issues and allows you to further your research in progression. The writing style used can get rather complex though, be prepared for that. I agree with everything provided in this book and recommend it to anyone who's interested in either the psychological effects of absence of a parent, or seek to identify it themselves.
