Maximize voice connectivity on Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers with the 4-Port Network Interface Module (NIM) designed for FXS, FXS-E, and DID capabilities. This compact, future‑ready module delivers high‑density analog telephony interfaces that enable reliable PSTN connectivity, seamless integration with Cisco Unified Communications Manager, and scalable voice deployments for small to mid‑size enterprises and branch offices. Built for Cisco IOS XE environments, this NIM extends the router’s voice capabilities without sacrificing performance or manageability.

  • High‑density analog interfaces: a 4‑port NIM that supports FXS, FXS‑E, and DID configurations, enabling flexible voice topology in a single module.
  • Flexible signaling options: supports traditional analog telephony signaling with the Cisco IOS XE voice stack, allowing you to route calls, manage lines, and integrate with SIP trunking as needed.
  • Cisco ISR integration: designed specifically for the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers, leveraging the router’s processing power, service modules, and Unified Communications capabilities.
  • Hot‑swap friendly and scalable: engineered for easy installation in supported NIM slots with minimal downtime, enabling scalable growth as voice requirements evolve.
  • Cost‑effective convergence: reduces the need for separate analog gateways or traditional PBX hardware by delivering reliable voice interfaces directly through the Cisco ISR ecosystem.

Technical Details of Cisco 4-Port Network Interface Module - FXS, FXS-E and DID

  • Module type: Network Interface Module (NIM) for Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers
  • Ports: 4 analog ports capable of FXS, FXS‑E, and DID configurations to support a variety of voice deployments
  • Interface type: analog telephony interfaces routed through the Cisco ISR’s voice gateway stack
  • Compatibility: designed for Cisco 4000 Series ISRs with available NIM slots; requires appropriate IOS XE software and licensing for voice features
  • Signaling and features: supports typical telephony signaling and integration with Cisco voice applications, including SIP trunking and call‑routing via the ISR
  • Power and connection: powered through the router’s backplane; no separate power supply required for the module itself
  • Physical form factor: modular NIM form factor that fits into standard Cisco 4000 Series chassis slots
  • Operating environment: designed to operate within the validated temperature and operational ranges of Cisco ISR deployments

How to Install Cisco 4-Port Network Interface Module

  • Prepare the router: verify that your Cisco 4000 Series ISR supports NIM installations and that you have a compatible slot available for the new module.
  • Power considerations: power down the chassis if required by your hardware guidelines, or follow your model’s recommended hot‑swap procedure for NIMs to minimize downtime.
  • Insert the NIM: align the module with the NIM slot and firmly seat it into place until it is securely connected to the backplane.
  • Secure the module: fasten any retention screws (if applicable) and ensure the module is seated properly to avoid misalignment or loose contacts.
  • Verify installation: power up (or resume operation) and use the router’s command‑line interface to confirm the module is recognized. Run commands such as show inventory and show hw-module to verify presence and health of the NIM.
  • Configure voice ports: map the analog ports to voice‑ports in your Cisco IOS XE configuration, assign line appearances, and enable the appropriate signaling and dial plans for FXS, FXS‑E, or DID use cases.
  • Test connectivity: connect analog handsets or devices to the NIM’s ports, place test calls, and validate call quality, DTMF, and any required DID routing or call routing rules within your voice gateway setup.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the Cisco 4-Port Network Interface Module - FXS, FXS-E and DID? It is a four‑port analog voice interface module (NIM) for Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers, designed to support FXS, FXS‑E, and DID configurations for connecting analog telephony devices and providing direct inward dialing capabilities within a Cisco voice network.
  • Which routers is it compatible with? This NIM is intended for Cisco 4000 Series ISRs that include available NIM slots and run compatible Cisco IOS XE software with voice features enabled.
  • Do I need a license to use the voice features on this module? Voice capabilities on Cisco ISR platforms often depend on the overall router licensing and feature set. Ensure your IOS XE image includes the necessary voice features and that any required licenses are in place for SIP trunking, call routing, and telephony signaling.
  • How many analog lines can I support with this module? The module provides four analog ports (FXS/FXS‑E/DID). The exact line configurations (e.g., how many FXS versus DID ports) depend on the chosen configuration within your deployment and the signaling mode you implement.
  • What are typical use cases for this NIM? Ideal for small to mid‑size deployments needing analog telephone handsets, fax lines, or DID capabilities to connect to a traditional PSTN or hybrid VoIP/PSTN environment, all managed through the Cisco ISR and Unified Communications workflows.

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!

My dogs favorite balls
Size: Medium
These are great for my dog who always has to have a ball in her mouth. Not too hard so I don't have to worry about her teeth. They last for ever. They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape. They still bounce, she still chases it and she still chews on it so I don't think she notices or cares. I've gotten her a bag full of these over time and I have only seen one that she chewed a chunk out.

My Dachshunds Love These
Size: Small
These balls are durable, flexible material, highly chewable without being easily destroyed. I stuff them with Milkbone Maro Snacks, which are just the right size to twist into the holes in the ball. My dogs literally get an hour+ chewing and chasing entertainment from these. They chew them, they sometimes 'pop' out of their mouths, go rolling across the floor, dogs chasing them. This satisfies their urge to hunt prey. Dachshunds can easily tear this kind of stuff-it-toy apart. These have lasted for a long time without tearing or shredding. I would NOT recommend them for a dog much larger than a tweenie weenie. They're a bit on the small side and might be swallowed by a larger dog. It would be cool it they also came in a larger size (and probably ball wall thickness also) for the bigger dogs to enjoy. These stuff-it chew balls are better than the kong balls my dogs had before these. Highly recommend them.
