The CWR-18-17PD is a purpose-built wall-mounted rack system from Middle Atlantic designed for structured cabling environments where floor space is at a premium and reliable, orderly equipment mounting is essential. With 18U of vertical rack space and a compact 17-inch depth, this swinging wall rack makes it possible to consolidate servers, switches, patch panels, power condition modules, and AV gear in tight rooms, data closets, control rooms, or broadcast setups. The result is a clean, professional installation that balances accessibility, airflow, and security, while preserving precious room dimensions for other critical infrastructure. Built to endure the rigors of daily use in professional installations, the CWR-18-17PD offers a durable solution that scales with your evolving IT, AV, and network needs.

Designed for practical, long-term reliability, the CWR-18-17PD features welded steel construction and a robust, powder-coated finish that resists impact, corrosion, and dust. The swinging wall mount design enables effortless, tool-free access to rear cabling and equipment, reducing maintenance time and downtime during reconfigurations. The combination of a secure front door, ventilated panels, and standard 19-inch rails ensures compatibility with a wide range of equipment from compact AV processors to compact network switches and patch panels. Whether you’re building out a small data closet, a professional recording studio, or a high-demand control room, this rack provides a professional-grade platform that keeps equipment organized, protected, and easy to service.

As a hallmark of Middle Atlantic quality, the CWR-18-17PD emphasizes thoughtful cable management and airflow. The rack is designed to minimize heat buildup around stacked devices while keeping cables tidy and accessible. This translates into improved reliability, easier troubleshooting, and a more polished, scalable setup. The 18U capacity accommodates a broad spectrum of devices in a single, integrated enclosure, reducing clutter and the need for multiple cabinets or stands. With its secure locking mechanism, it also helps protect sensitive equipment from tampering or accidental interference—an important consideration in shared environments and production facilities. In short, the CWR-18-17PD delivers a sophisticated, space-efficient mounting solution that combines strength, flexibility, and professional-grade features in one compact package.

  • Space-saving wall-mounted design: The 18U configuration maximizes vertical mounting space while keeping equipment within easy reach. Its 17-inch depth is engineered to fit tight rooms, control centers, and broadcast suites where floor-standing racks would feel bulky. The swinging mechanism allows the front door to stay closed during installation and maintenance, while the entire rack swings out for full rear access. This reduces the need to clear large walkways or move equipment mid-project, enabling faster deployments and simpler upgrades. With careful cable routing and dedicated cable management features, you can maintain clean, organized runs from patch panels to switches and power conditioners without compromising airflow or accessibility. This design is particularly advantageous in environments with limited room width, such as data closets behind desks, control rooms with streaming gear, or small studio spaces where every inch matters.
  • Locking front door for security and dust protection: The front door includes a reliable locking mechanism to keep critical devices shielded from dust, tampering, or accidental access during busy production days or in shared facilities. The locking feature provides peace of mind in environments where equipment must stay secure while still offering rapid, tool-free servicing. The swing-out design allows technicians to reach rear cables and devices without removing equipment, making routine maintenance, firmware updates, and reconfigurations faster and safer. In practice, this combination of security and accessibility translates to fewer service interruptions and a more efficient workflow for IT, AV, and broadcast teams alike.
  • Rugged welded steel construction with durable finish: Built to withstand demanding professional environments, the CWR-18-17PD uses welded steel construction for enhanced rigidity and longevity. The black powder-coated finish resists scratches, scuffs, and everyday wear, preserving the rack’s pristine appearance even after years of use in busy facilities. This robust build ensures that mounted equipment remains stable during operation and when the rack is swung open or closed, reducing the risk of misalignment or equipment damage. The combination of strength and a modern, professional finish makes the CWR-18-17PD a dependable centerpiece for any room where performance and presentation matter.
  • Standard 19-inch rails and flexible layout for broad compatibility: The rack incorporates standard 19-inch mounting rails, supporting a wide range of devices from small DSPs to compact switches, patch panels, and compact amplifiers. Rails are adjustable to accommodate different equipment heights and configurations, giving you flexibility to optimize space, serviceability, and airflow. Removable side panels and accessible interior channels support clean, efficient cable management, enabling neat, compliant installations that satisfy both performance and aesthetic expectations. This standard compatibility ensures you don’t have to compromise on gear choice or future upgrades, making the CWR-18-17PD a scalable solution for evolving networks and AV installations.
  • Efficient cooling and organized cable management: Thoughtful ventilation and cable routing capabilities help maintain stable operating temperatures and reduce thermal hotspots. Perforated panels, vented sides, and dedicated cable-management pathways keep airflow unobstructed around dense equipment stacks. Proper airflow reduces fan noise, extends component life, and minimizes the risk of thermal throttling in high-demand setups. In practice, this means more reliable performance during long sessions, streams, or broadcast runs, and a cleaner, easier-to-maintain rack environment overall.

how to install Middle Atlantic CWR-18-17PD

  • Step 1: Plan your layout. Identify wall studs or a solid backing capable of supporting the full weight of the rack plus equipment. Use a stud finder to confirm stud locations, and mark a level mounting line that will align with the rack’s back mounting points.
  • Step 2: Prepare the mounting surface. If mounting to studs, select appropriate heavy-duty screws or lag bolts rated for the wall material. For masonry walls, use concrete anchors or wall brackets designed for rack installations. Ensure you have all required hardware before beginning assembly.
  • Step 3: Attach the swing-out frame to the wall. With help, lift the rack into position and secure the wall-mounted frame to the studs or backing through the predrilled mounting holes. Verify levelness and tighten hardware to the manufacturer’s torque recommendations. A secure base is essential for safe operation of the swing-out mechanism and for supporting the weight of loaded equipment.
  • Step 4: Install the rack rails and accessories. Mount the standard 19" rails to the sides at the desired heights, and adjust for the equipment you plan to install. Attach removable side panels and any cable-management features included with the rack to establish clean, accessible pathways for power and data cables.
  • Step 5: Load and arrange equipment. Begin with heavier devices toward the bottom to lower center of gravity and improve stability. Leave ample headroom for cooling and service access, then route cables through the management guides to minimize tangling and obstruction.
  • Step 6: Close the door and test operation. After loading the devices, swing the rack back into its mounted position, engage the locking door, and verify that the swing mechanism opens smoothly without interference. Perform a quick check of cable clearances, ventilation, and weight distribution to ensure safe, reliable operation.

My favorite middle grade book of 2018 so far
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I'll never look at a motel with the same eyes again. Author Kelly Yang brings us Mia Tang, a younger version of herself, who helped her parents manage a motel in southern California in the early 1990s. Mia and her parents arrive from China with two hundred dollars, unwavering optimism, and the belief that if they work hard enough, they will achieve the American dream:  a big house, a dog, and an endless supply of juicy hamburgers. After two years of backbreaking jobs and sketchy living conditions, Mia's parents rush to sign a contract to manage the Calista Motel located five miles from Disneyland. Mr. Yao, the notoriously cheap and unscrupulous motel owner, informs the Tangs that the contract allows him to make any changes and if they don't like the terms, "Just say the word. There are ten thousand immigrants who would take your job in two seconds" (p. 27). Mia quickly makes friends with the "weeklies" and assigns herself front desk duty because her parents must clean every room themselves and be available 24/7  to check in guests. Mia's moxie and sense of justice emerge as she takes on adult responsibilities with a sense of pride and unbridled enthusiasm. She makes plenty of mistakes which makes us empathize with her struggles and root for her as she tackles the english language, bullies, crime, and embarrassment about her thrift store clothes. (Keep your eyes open for the tale of the designer jeans.) Chapters are vignettes that are strung along with seamless transitions to make reading a pure pleasure. The author captures Mia's voice so authentically that the reader is instantly drawn into the story. Mia's uses the power of the written word to advocate for herself and others. Kids will fall in love with Mia and cheer her fierce determination as she navigates her way through poverty and injustice, bringing her family, the weeklies, and everyone else who want to be part of the American dream with her.

Outstanding!
Format: Hardcover
Hiya Bumbles! I am so excited to share this upper elementary/middle grade book with all of you! This is the story of Mia Tang, a Chinese immigrant, and her family’s quest for a better, “freer” life in America. The Tang family is given the opportunity to manage a motel and a journey of heart breaking and heart filling experiences begin. Ms. Yang artfully brings sass and humor to very serious topics regarding social issues that continue to pervade our communities. This is quite a relevant read right now and I can see how fabulous discussions and lessons will arise from this novel. The main character, Mia, is spunky, bright and spreads love everywhere she goes. She also stands up for herself and others when it counts. I loved getting to know her. It was eye opening to read some of the circumstances that the immigrants in the story have to live through. And although there are heavy social injustices that are prevalent in her life, Mia handles them with grace and just the right amount of sass and compassion. I absolutely would recommend this story and I think it teaches so many valuable lessons to readers! I also think that it can transcend age up through YA and it’s a great read for adults too. It’s actually based on some of the author’s own experiences. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 from me! Loved it! #frontdesk #kellyyang #scholastic #kidlit #bookstagram #immigrant #chinese #miatang #spunkandsass #booknerd #kellyyangisawesome

Great book for young minds to learn about prejudice, immigration, and keeping your identity.
Format: Hardcover
Brand spanking new hardcover. Quality was great. That's the product from Amazon. The story itself has become priceless. I bought it to participate in the Great Global Read Aloud project with my class. However, being fourth generation American born Chinese AND teaching to students of various ethnic backgrounds and citizenship, this story really spoke to me. My 6 year old son has asked me to read it aloud to him as I was vetting the book and has really enjoyed it. Keep in mind there are some mentions of "idiot" and "hell", both in context, but I probably won't read it aloud exactly like that in the classroom to avoid any issues. It's a very eye opening story and lends itself to a lot of conversation about where you come from, who you want to be, and how to be the true you, without giving way to stereotypes and prejudices. These days, more people could use a more humbling story like this to truly just make LIFE GREAT AGAIN, no matter where you live.

One of the best middle grade books of 2018!
Format: Hardcover
FRONT DESK is loosely based on author Kelly Yang’s life experience, as explained in an author’s note at the end of the book. Her straightforward writing makes this book perfect for younger middle grade readers (Mia is 10). Yet Yang tackles difficult issues like interpersonal, systemic, and institutional racism. She writes so simply and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a young person walking away without understanding these powerful messages. FRONT DESK is infused with dark truths about America and still manages to be light, heartwarming, and fast-paced. Lovable Mia solves problems by using her writing skills—not her math skills as her mother wishes she would. She beats the system by using her words, often disguised as the words of adults, to point out injustices and find pathways to a better life for her family and friends. Mia’s and her parents’ find—actually, create—community at the Calavista Motel. They fight back when multiple systems conspire to make life impossible for Hank, an African American man who lives at the hotel. They devise a system to hide desperate Chinese immigrants in vacant rooms. This is deep social justice work, accompanied by anecdotes of Mia’s follies at the front desk and problems at school. The book ends on a hopeful note, with the Tangs’ community surrounding them to help them take the first step off the poverty rollercoaster. The solution they come up with has a chance at helping others get off, too. FRONT DESK shifts the narrative about the American experience, acknowledging that there are many American experiences. The pathway to the American Dream can take many forms, and Yang has described one that is heart wrenching, hopeful, and a lot of fun along the way.
