In what is now known as "The Sandberg Game," Ryne Sandberg pulled a remarkable performance to bring Chicago back from the brink in this game with against St. Louis. Trailing by 6 runs in the sixth, Sandberg hit a two run single as part of a five-run rally by Chicago. Then Sandberg tied the game in the ninth with a leadoff home run, and finally, tied the game yet again in the tenth with a two-out blast. Chicago eventually won the game in the eleventh inning on a bases-loaded single from Dave Owen.

In 1998 Kerry Wood became only the 2nd pitcher, after Roger Clemens, to strike out 20 batters in a 9-inning game. More remarkably, Wood was only 20 years old at the time and pitching in only his fifth major league game. Meaning that Wood struck out his age in only his fifth try in the big leagues.

Chicago ended a 95 year drought in 2003, winning their first postseason series since 1908. The win came against Atlanta, with Chicago prevailing in 5 games. Chicago won decisively in game 5, winning by 4 runs to take them to the NLCS.
