This humorous and dark work by Geoffrey Farmer is emblematic of his cutout sculptures but unique in its composition as a dynamic triad. We are pleased to have End of the Zoo, which was made for this event, from such an accomplished artist. His work is highly collected and will continue to accrue historical significance, as he is the next artist to represent Canada at the Venice Biennial.
Geoffrey Farmer is a Vancouver based multi-media artist whose creates installation, sculpture, video, text, collage, and performance works. His often site-specific large-scale installations are based on themes such as Frank Zappa’s musical catalogue, Walt Whitman’s poetry, and an encyclopedia titled The Last Two Million Years. He has garnered attention both nationally and internationally and was recently chosen to represent Canada at the 2017 Venice Biennale and participated in the last Documenta. His work is in numerous collections including the National Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Recent solo exhibitions include Geoffrey Farmer, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; and Leaves of Grass, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. Farmer is the recipient of a 2003 VIVA Award, a 2008 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award and the 2011 Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Art Award. He is represented by Catriona Jefferies Gallery in Vancouver and Casey Kaplan, New York.
