Its lead single Dream On reflected that hybrid approach, pairing acoustic elements with spare electronic programming.
The album debuted at number nine in the UK and number eight in the US, selling 115,000 copies in its first week in America. It went on to earn gold certification from the RIAA and in Canada. Exciter was supported by a major world tour that became one of the most commercially successful of the band’s career.
Reception on release was mixed to positive. Critics praised Bell’s subtle production and the album’s experimental lean, while others felt the material lacked the strength of the band’s earlier work.
