By: John Quincy Adams | Series: Library of America Adams Family CollectionA landmark edition of an American masterpiece: the incomparable self-portrait of John Quincy Adams and his times from the Revolution to the coming of the Civil War
The diary of John Quincy Adams is one of the most extraordinary works in American literature. Begun in 1779 at the age of twelve and kept more or less faithfully until his death almost 70 years later, and totaling some fifteen thousand closely-written manuscript pages, it is both an unrivaled record of historical events and personalities from the nation's founding to the antebellum era and a masterpiece of American self-portraiture, tracing the spiritual, literary, and scientific interests of an exceptionally lively mind. Now, for the 250th anniversary of Adams's birth, Library of America and historian David Waldstreicher present a two-volume reader's edition of diary selections based for the first time on the original manuscripts, restoring personal and revealing passages suppressed in earlier editions.
Volume I begins during the American Revolution, with Adams's first entry, as he prepares to embark on a perilous wartime voyage to Europe with his father, diplomat John Adams, and records his early impressions of Franklin and Jefferson and of Paris on the eve of revolution; it details his abbreviated but eventful years of study at Harvard and his emergence into the world of politics in his own right, as American minister to the Netherlands and to Prussia, and then as a U. S. senator from Massachusetts; and it reveals a young man at war with his passions, before finding love with the remarkable Louisa Catherine Johnson. In passages that form a kind of real-world War and Peace, the diary follows the young married couple to St. Petersburg, where as U.S. minister Adams is a witness to Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Its account of the negotiations at Ghent to end the War of 1812, where Adams leads the American delegation, is the perhaps the most detailed and dramatic picture of a diplomatic confrontation ever recorded. Volume 1 concludes with his elevation as Secretary of State under James Monroe, as he takes the fore in a fractious cabinet and emerges as the principal architect of what will become known as the Monroe Doctrine.

When in a pinch, even Monaco couldn’t tell the difference.
Size: XX-Large, Color: Navy
Here’s the revised review with the updated final paragraph:

**When in a pinch, even Monaco couldn’t tell the difference**
There I was, stranded in the Swiss Alps, of all places, when an urgent call came through—a last-minute invite to a charity gala in Monaco. You can imagine my predicament. No tuxedo, no time to fly back to Dutchess County to retrieve the one I had custom-tailored in Sardinia by Fabrizio, the island’s finest (and only) tailor. Fabrizio’s tuxedo, you see, wasn’t just any suit. I had it made after a rather *unique* incident involving a chess tournament, a peculiar art heist, and the world’s finest pecorino cheese. But I digress.
With no time to return to Dutchess County—or even Sardinia—there I was, frantically searching for something that wouldn’t make me look like an underdressed disaster among the crème de la crème. Amazon to the rescue. I stumbled upon this navy blue tuxedo with a black shawl collar and, in a state of mild desperation, ordered it around midnight.
It arrived before I even woke up the next morning. Amazon’s overnight delivery, an absolute lifesaver. I put it on, and, to my surprise, the fit was near perfection—almost as if Fabrizio himself had secretly slipped his measurements to the manufacturer. The deep navy color was striking, and the black shawl collar gave just the right amount of contrast. It looked like a tuxedo far more expensive than the one I’d ordered in a slight state of panic.
At the event, the tuxedo didn’t just blend in—it stood out. More than a few people took notice, including a former diplomat who, with raised eyebrows, asked if I’d had it custom-made in Milan. I simply smiled and let the mystery linger. The tux held its own through hours of mingling, dancing, and even a few strategic maneuvers to avoid the advances of a rather persistent heiress. And by the end of the night? Not a wrinkle to be found.
Now, about the fit—be warned. It's tight. Very tight. If you decide to give this tux a try, order two or even three sizes up. And unless you have time to see a tailor, the trousers will almost certainly need hemming. In a real pinch, fabric tape will do the trick. But once you’ve got the sizing sorted, it’s all smooth sailing from there.

Tricky Fit
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Black
First order returned - pants fit, jacket & vest too small. Reordered a size up - pants too big, jacket & vest fit. The pants had to be hem and waistband taken in. And still need suspenders. My advice, give yourself enough time for alterations.

Good quality
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Black
Loved the quality for the price. Fit is more for a size under what is listed. The pants are hip huggers not waist high.
