Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter is as unconventional and wide-ranging as Frank Deford's remarkable career, in which he has chronicled the heroes and the characters of just about every sport in nearly every medium. Deford joined Sports Illustrated in 1962, fresh, and fresh out of Princeton. In 1990, he was Editor-in-Chief of The National Sports Daily, one of the most ambitious--and ill-fated--projects in the history of American print journalism. But then, he's endured: writing ten novels, winning an Emmy (not to mention being a fabled Lite Beer All-Star), and last week he read something like his fourteen-hundredth commentary on NPR's "Morning Edition."

From the Mad Men-like days of SI in the '60s, and the "bush" years of the early NBA, to Deford's visit to apartheid South Africa with Arthur Ashe, and his friend's brave and tragic death, Over Time is packed with intriguing people and stories. Interwoven through his personal history, Deford lovingly traces the entire arc of American sportswriting from the lurid early days of the Police Gazette, through Grantland Rice and Red Smith and on up to ESPN. This is a wonderful, inspired book--equal parts funny and touching--a treasure for sports fans. Just like Frank Deford.

Praise for Over Time

"Equal doses of self-deprecating humor and anecdotal history of American sports journalism are the essence of Frank Deford's entertaining new memoir."--Chicago Tribune

"Deford is the Holy Grail. He's simply one of the greatest sportswriters of all time. ... Over Time] has a little bit of everything -- great stories about interviewing everyone from Richard Nixon ... to Jerry Jones. ... Deford played with the Harlem Globetrotters, introduced the world to Bill Bradley, really disliked Rodney Dangerfield, edited the only national sports daily in our history (The National), and has great takes on the history and characters of Sports Illustrated in its formative years. . . . Deford's the best."--Peter King, SI.com

"He sketches insightful remembrances of stars like Wilt Chamberlain and Billie Jean King and lavishes affection and admiration on Sports Illustrated colleagues Andre Laguerre, Dan Jenkins, and the 'tortured' writer Mark Kram ... Deford is] sports writing's Sinatra." --San Francisco Chronicle

"Endearing... Over Time imparts a sense of a life well lived and fully enjoyed."--New York Times

"The mixture of homage to sportswriters who came before him, such as Grantland Rice; sometimes wistful vignettes of sports figures like Arthur Ashe; and his own personal reflections on the evolution of sports journalism combine to offer a cultural perspective that transcends a mere job." --Publishers Weekly (Top 10 in Sports)

"Deford's cred is incredible, his accolades deserved... He does not pull a punch when it comes to boxing or even to the tastes-great, less-filling Miller Lite commercials he once made... Deford] has long been the genuine article." --Los Angeles Times

"A cool ride through Deford's career."-- Minneapolis Star-Tribune

"Frank Deford is the best there is. His memoir Over Time is beautiful, funny, poignant and poetic." --Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights and Father's Day

"A wonderful book. Over Time is both a treasure and a treasury."--Sally Jenkins, Washington Post columnist and New York Times bestselling author of It's Not About the Bike

"Frank Deford is the best sportswriter I've ever read. If there's a Mount Rushmore of sportswriting, Deford is up there, purple ties and all."--Tony Kornheiser

Good quality
Color: Black
Have used the frother 5 days in a row. It comes already charged. Fingers crossed no issues when I eventually have to charge it. I love everything about it. It’s worth a little bit of extra money as you can control the blending power from slow to fast. Easily held with both hands to coordinate. Today for a change I elected to just add a touch of bourbon caramel syrup to my oat milk -an excellent choice! They give you two attachments which is helpful. I’m not hard on my kitchen appliances but it’s good to know I have an immediate back up if needed. I rinse frother attachment out immediately in a cup of warm water and air dry on a towel. At this point, I highly recommend. My next adventure in the kitchen will be Matcha tea. I will use the bamboo whisk for the actual tea. If I decide to add oat milk to the top,(such as for a cold latte) I will use this frother.

Higher quality then I expect, very satisfied
Color: Gray
High quality overall, very high powered. It looks really fancy and elegant. The adjustable speed knob on the top is really great. The stand looks really nice but isn't the best design because it is easy to knock over when you take it out, that's my only issue with it.

Mixes my protein shake powder
Color: Blue
My husband and I both drink protein shakes daily. We have vortex mixers that work great, but they are plastic and getting old, and really needed to be replaced. In an effort to reduce microplastics in our lives, I am trying to use less plastic mixing cups. I couldn't find anything small enough (other than regular blenders) with glass and metal parts that would work well for us. During my search on here, several frothers showed up. This one caught my eye because of the amount of sales, quick delivery, and of course, decent pricing. Some of the reviews had me a little skeptical, and time will tell regarding the longevity, but so far I am pleased. My protein powders are on the heavy side, but this little frother really gets the job done. Instead of having to use separate mixing cups (saving me on dishwashing), I just use my morning coffee cup (it's big enough) to mix my protein shake in. My husband just uses a regular glass. Neither of us can believe the power this little thing has. We are getting smooth shakes! Here is what I really like about it: It is powerful and mixes well; the frother is metal and not plastic; it cleans extremely easy; after making several shakes the battery has not died; can be used in glasses, coffee cups, even disposable cups (when we buy donut shop coffee); and I love the little stand which takes up barely any counter space. Less plastic, less clean-up, dependable (so far), and small, making it convenient even for travel. I'm really glad I got this, and hope it will last. One last thing, do not turn it on while cleaning under running water. (Yes, you can laugh.)

Powerful frother with a long rechargeable battery life
Color: Black
After purchasing three of the battery operated frothers. I finally found this amazing frother. It is very powerful so you do have to be careful not to slosh liquid out of your cup when you’re using it. But I have found it helps if you rotate the frother in a stirring motion while you are using it. That really helps keep the liquid from overflowing out of the cup. It has a sleek design and is rechargeable and the charge less about two weeks.I love this one so much. I take it with me when I travel. I actually left my original one at my mother’s house the last time I visited her and have ordered another one for my house. Highly recommend.

Great Power and Creamy Foam
Color: White
This frother is amazing and has really good power. It creates creamy, smooth foam in seconds and works perfectly for iced lattes, cappuccinos, and matcha. I love that it’s rechargeable and lightweight, but still feels strong and high quality. As someone who loves coffee, this has become one of my favorite tools for making café-style drinks at home. Easy to use, easy to clean, and looks beautiful on my coffee station.
