Rugby: The Game is a two-player boardgame with a turn-based format involving each player taking an Action, combined with collection and use of scenario-based cards that affect gameplay.

The board is set up to visualise the action happening around the ball, and involved a maximum of six active Player cards at a time (and usually less). The board also employs a Field Ruler that indicates the position of play in relation to the Try lines.

In a turn players can take Actions such as Supporting a player (bringing them into the action), Running, Passing, Kicking, Tackling, or taking a General Play card. The actions have rules that keep the essence of the play, without getting into too much detail.

During play, players will be involved with “mini-games” to participate in a Ruck, Scrum, and Lineout. These are easy to learn and fast to play, and complete the authentic Rugby gameplay.

The game can have optional features added if players choose, including taking Coach Cards that provide advantages in different styles of play, and Weather Cards that affect ball handling.
