Gastrochilus bellinus (Rchb.f.) Kuntze is a warm-to-cool growing, monopodial epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia — including southern China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It grows in dense, mossy forests at elevations around 600-1700 meters above sea level.
Features:
The plant has a short to medium‐length stem carrying typically 6-8 narrowly oblanceolate, falcate (curved) leaves with an unequal, shallowly bifid apex. Its flowering is from late winter to spring, producing a very short, erect, sub-orbicular inflorescence bearing 2-7 fragrant, waxy flowers held close to the base of the plant in clusters. Flowers are approximately 3.0-3.3 cm in diameter, with sepals and petals pale yellow marked with burgundy/brown spots; the lip (labellum) is white with pink or purple fringed margin.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright but indirect light. Filtered or morning sun is good. Avoid harsh midday sun which can burn foliage.
-
Temperature: Performs best in intermediate to warm conditions. Cooler nights are tolerated. Keep away from frost.
-
Humidity & Airflow: High humidity is beneficial. Ensure good air circulation to avoid fungal issues, especially since flowers and leaves are waxy and can hold moisture.
-
Watering: Keep the roots or medium moist. This species does not like being allowed to dry out completely. Regular watering, especially during growth/flowering season.
-
Substrate / Mounting: Grows well mounted (on bark or wood) or in potting medium that’s loose and well-draining (moss + bark etc.). Mounting helps mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.
