The timeless appeal of Kala cotton stripes on a simple ‘A’ line dress is a living tribute to the adaptability of the Vankaam weavers of Kutch. Complimenting the dress is a soft drape kala cotton stole with extra weft ‘tree’ motifs and lines of kantha embroidery running across the stole.
ABOUT THE CRAFT
VANKAAM OF KUTCH
It is said 600 years ago weavers of the Meghwal community from Rajasthan migrated and settled in Kutch. Known as ‘Vankars’ or weavers, they originally wove woolen shawls for nomadic Rabari or shepherd communities, who supplied them with wool. Over the years their markets grew to serve other local communities residing in nearby locations. Today, with growth of new markets they use a wide variety of yarns ranging from kala cotton, mill spun cottons to linen and wild silk. However they have preserved their traditional processes from yarn prep to weaving and continue to weave as did their ancestors centuries ago.
VANKAAM TECHNIQUE
They weave on simple pit looms using bamboo reeds without dobbys and achieve intricate motifs by manually counting each extra thread that is inserted. This mastery over the extra weft technique is their most unique feature. Each motif holds a symbolic value and forms a unique design vocabulary handed down over centuries. Traditionally the use of vibrant multi colors in the extra weft end panels gave their shawls a distinct rustic identity that stood out against the stark dessert landscape. Today colors have changed with new markets but ancient motifs still remain.
