STORY
La Esperanza is run by Mr. Esmérita Vásquez. She is 53 years old and lives in the town of La Coipa in the Cajamarca region of Peru. Her farm is located in el Cautivo Sector and she walks from her home to her farm. It takes about 40-50 minutes for her to get there by foot. She farms Typica, Caturra and a small amount of Gesha. Her farming style is quite rustic, but the varietal selection speaks for itself. Esmérita and her husband do all the work on the harvest, so days get long and mobility is difficult. But therein lies some of the magic to this cup — because it’s just the two of them (and don’t forget the family mule that brings the coffee back down to their house where the drying beds are), they physically can’t harvest and then rush to pulp the coffees in the same day, as is common in many parts of the world. Instead, they leave the day’s harvest tied up in grain-to bags right there on the farm to collect a few days later, which incidentally begins a slightly intense fermentation stage, somewhat mimicking the now-popular “anaerobic” style.
La Coipa is one of Northern Peru’s most prolific coffee producing regions, where many small-holders take advantage of the high elevation and historic coffee varieties to produce a clean, bright, crisp cup that is unrivaled amongst their neighbors. Esmérita is a member of the Alpes Andinos Growers’ Association, which provides her access to consulting, cupping, education and other services, as well as discounts on tools and organic fertilizers for the farm. The resulting cup, under the guidance of Alpes Andinos, is a delicious, bright and balanced cup that invites the drinker back for more.
