Corybas himalaicus is a small terrestrial orchid in the helmet orchid genus Corybas, native to the eastern Himalayas and surrounding regions including Assam, western Sichuan and western Yunnan in China, and also recorded in Taiwan. It grows only a few centimeters tall with a single leaf positioned just below a solitary flower. Unlike many other orchids, this species lacks true petals; its flower is characterized by a large dorsal sepal that arches over the reproductive column and an oblong lip that extends beyond it, often with short spur-like structures at the base. The leaf is typically green with white nerves and the plant is usually found on moist, mossy ground or wet vertical rocks in shaded forested areas.
Features:
- Very small terrestrial orchid, typically 4–5 cm tall.
- Produces one solitary leaf and one solitary flower.
- No petals; the flower is dominated by a large dorsal sepal forming a hood over the column.
- The lip is oblong and longer than the dorsal sepal, with short spur-like bases.
- Leaf is green with distinct white nerves and sits just under the flower.
- Native to eastern Himalayas and nearby mountainous regions, growing on moss or moist rocks.
- Rare and distinctive among local orchids for its lack of petals.
Care Tips:
- Provide a cool, shaded environment with indirect light to mimic montane forest conditions.
- Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive substrate such as sphagnum moss mixed with leaf litter.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
- Ensure high humidity with good air circulation to prevent rot.
- Avoid direct sunlight and strong heat; this species prefers cooler temperatures.
- Simulate natural seasonal changes with slight reductions in moisture after flowering.
