Armadillidium depressum 'Magic Potion' is one of the most beautiful and sought-after pale Armadillidium in the UK hobby — a striking selectively-bred morph prized for its semi-transparent, milky-white appearance overlaid with delicate yellow markings. The effect is genuinely magical: a soft, pale, almost translucent body dappled with golden-yellow tones, quite unlike anything in the standard European isopod palette. It's a larger, more substantial take on the famous Magic Potion look — noticeably bigger than the more common Armadillidium vulgare 'Magic Potion' it resembles, making the delicate colouration even easier to appreciate.

What makes the depressum Magic Potion particularly worth keeping is the combination of that unique pale colouration with genuinely easy, beginner-friendly care. A. depressum — commonly known as the Southern Pill Woodlouse — is a hardy, adaptable Western European species that breeds readily and produces large broods, making it ideal for newcomers as well as a rewarding addition for collectors who love the Magic Potion aesthetic at a larger size. They sit among the more distinctive and collectable Armadillidium, alongside the marbled Espanyoli, the bold Zebra, and the spotted Yellow Spanish Granulatum.

One important husbandry point worth getting right: despite some care charts suggesting otherwise, A. depressum is a European species that prefers dry to moderately humid conditions (around 50–65%) with good ventilation and a moisture gradient — NOT constant high humidity. They genuinely don't moult well in persistently wet, high-humidity environments. A drier setup with one moist corner is the key to keeping them thriving.

They're native to Western Europe — found across the UK, France, Belgium, Italy and neighbouring regions — which makes them genuinely well-suited to UK keeping, tolerating cooler temperatures and seasonal variation comfortably. Like all Armadillidium, they're true pill woodlice, readily conglobating (rolling into a tight defensive ball) when disturbed.

What Makes Depressum Magic Potion Isopods Special

Several factors have made the depressum Magic Potion one of the most coveted pale Armadillidium in the UK hobby:

The semi-transparent, yellow-marked colouration is genuinely beautiful. The milky-white, almost translucent body overlaid with delicate golden-yellow markings gives them a soft, magical appearance unlike almost anything else among European isopods. It's the defining feature and the single biggest reason collectors seek them out.

Larger than the vulgare Magic Potion. While they closely resemble the more common Armadillidium vulgare 'Magic Potion', the depressum form is noticeably bigger — a more substantial, observable isopod that shows off the delicate colouration even better. For keepers who love the Magic Potion look but want something larger, this is the one.

Genuinely easy and hardy. Despite their striking appearance, they're a hardy, adaptable, forgiving European species — undemanding once their moderate, drier conditions are met, and well-suited to beginners. A distinctive, collectable isopod that's genuinely accessible is an unusual and welcome combination.

Prolific with large broods. They breed readily and produce notably large brood sizes, building colonies steadily. This makes them satisfying for keepers wanting to see colony growth and rewarding as a self-sustaining display population.

Well-suited to UK keeping. As a Western European species, they tolerate cooler temperatures and seasonal fluctuations far better than tropical isopods — thriving at normal UK room temperatures without fuss, which makes them both easy and reliable.

Conglobation. Like all Armadillidium, they roll into a tight defensive ball when disturbed — the classic pillbug behaviour, and a pale, semi-transparent ball is a particularly pretty sight.

How Depressum Magic Potion Compares to Other Armadillidium

If you're choosing between pale and distinctive Armadillidium, here's how the depressum Magic Potion fits in:

  • vs Armadillidium vulgare 'Magic Potion': The close lookalike — both show the semi-transparent, yellow-marked Magic Potion colouration. The depressum form is noticeably larger, making it the more substantial, eye-catching option for keepers who want the Magic Potion look at a bigger size.
  • vs Espanyoli 'Marbelized': Both are easy, prolific, beginner-friendly European Armadillidium. Espanyoli show marbled patterning; the Magic Potion shows the pale semi-transparent yellow-marked look. Both hardy and rewarding — different distinctive aesthetics.
  • vs Zebra Isopods (A. maculatum): Zebras show bold black-and-white striping; the Magic Potion shows soft, pale, translucent colouration. Both hardy, beginner-friendly Mediterranean/European Armadillidium — choose based on whether bold pattern or delicate paleness appeals.
  • vs Yellow Spanish Granulatum (A. granulatum): Both larger European Armadillidium. Granulatum are bumpy with yellow spots on grey; the Magic Potion is pale and semi-transparent with yellow markings. Different textures and tones for collectors.

Setting Up the Enclosure

A 5–10 litre plastic container or terrarium suits a starter colony, with room to expand as the prolific colony grows. Plastic tubs with clip-lock lids hold appropriate humidity while allowing the ventilation European species need. The 3L Braplast tub works for smaller starter colonies, with larger housing as the population grows.

For ventilation, drill holes on opposite sides of the container for cross-ventilation. Medium ventilation suits the depressum Magic Potion — enough airflow to prevent the stagnant, overly-humid conditions they dislike, while maintaining the moist zone of a gradient. Keep the enclosure out of direct sunlight, with plenty of hiding spots. Browse our accessories collection for appropriate enclosures, vents, and other essentials.

Substrate

Build substrate appropriate for a drier European species:

  • Organic topsoil base (pesticide-free) as the foundation
  • Sphagnum peat moss mixed throughout for moderate moisture retention
  • Crushed limestone, calcium carbonate, or eggshells distributed throughout for calcium
  • Flake soil mixed in for added nutrition
  • Decaying white-rotted hardwood pieces incorporated throughout
  • A little horticultural charcoal can help keep the substrate fresh (optional)

Substrate depth: 5–8 cm for burrowing — they appreciate enough depth for moulting and security.

Top layer: Generous hardwood leaf litter — magnolia leaves and oak leaves work particularly well for long-lasting cover and food. Add cork bark and white-rotted wood pieces (a genuine favourite), plus a sphagnum moss patch on one side to create the moist zone of the gradient.

Humidity and Temperature — Drier, Not Tropical

This is the most important husbandry point. As a Western European species, the depressum Magic Potion prefers dry to moderately humid conditions (around 50–65%) with good ventilation — they genuinely don't moult well in persistently high-humidity environments. Aim for a moisture gradient with a dry bias rather than a uniformly wet enclosure:

  • Moist zone (about ¼ of enclosure): Sphagnum moss and damp leaf litter in one corner, misted to maintain moisture. This is where moulting individuals retreat.
  • Drier zone (about ¾ of enclosure): Drier substrate with leaf litter and bark cover, allowed to dry between mistings.

The gradient lets the colony self-regulate. Overwetting and stagnant humid conditions are genuinely more of a risk than slightly dry conditions — high humidity causes moulting problems for this species. As one PostPods customer noted about following the website's care guidance, getting moisture right is the key to keeping isopods successfully — too much moisture is the most common mistake. When in doubt, err drier and ensure good airflow.

Temperature should be 17–23°C — UK room temperature works year-round in most homes. As a European species, the depressum Magic Potion tolerates cooler temperatures and seasonal variation well, which makes it genuinely easy and reliable to keep here. Avoid sustained extremes in either direction, and keep the enclosure out of direct sunlight.

Diet

The depressum Magic Potion is an unfussy detritivore with broad appetites typical of Armadillidium:

  • Primary diet (always available): Decaying white-rotted wood (a genuine favourite), hardwood leaf litter (oak, beech), lichen, dried plant matter
  • Vegetables (1–2x weekly): Carrot, courgette, sweet potato, squash. Dried vegetables are useful, as fresh produce can mould quickly in a closed enclosure. Replace fresh foods within 24–48 hours.
  • Fruit (occasionally): Small amounts of dried fruit
  • Protein (1–2x weekly): Fish flakes, dried shrimp, dried insects. Browse our accessories collection for the full range of protein supplements.
  • Calcium (essential — always available): Cuttlefish bone, crushed limestone, calcium carbonate, crushed eggshells. Essential for healthy moulting and shell development — provide multiple sources distributed throughout.

Feeding approach: Maintain a base of leaf litter and decaying wood, supplementing with vegetables and protein. Avoid overfeeding fresh produce, which moulds quickly — provide portions consumed within 24–48 hours and remove uneaten fresh foods promptly.

Breeding

The depressum Magic Potion is an easy, prolific breeder with notably large brood sizes — one of the species' genuine appeals. They breed readily once their moderate, drier conditions are met.

Breeding observations:

  • Females carry developing eggs in a marsupium (brood pouch)
  • Live mancae emerge as fully-formed miniature versions of adults
  • Brood sizes are notably large
  • The pale, yellow-marked colouration develops as juveniles mature
  • Colony growth is reliable and relatively quick

For breeding success:

  • Stable temperatures within the comfort range (20–22°C optimal)
  • A drier moisture gradient (50–65% humidity) — avoid high humidity, which disrupts moulting
  • Adequate calcium availability throughout
  • Regular protein supplementation
  • Multiple bark and cork hides
  • Larger starter groups provide better genetic diversity and faster establishment

As an easy, prolific breeder, the depressum Magic Potion rewards keepers with steady, satisfying colony growth — and a colony of pale, semi-transparent, yellow-marked isopods makes a genuinely beautiful display.

Pair With Springtails

Add a thriving springtail culture to any depressum Magic Potion setup. Springtails handle mould and microbial growth at a scale isopods can't manage — particularly useful around protein foods and in the moist zone of the moisture gradient. They coexist peacefully with the Magic Potion and form a helpful cleanup partnership for European Armadillidium setups.

Who Should Buy Depressum Magic Potion Isopods?

Ideal for:

  • Beginners wanting a hardy, distinctive, forgiving species
  • Keepers attracted to the pale, semi-transparent, yellow-marked colouration
  • Anyone who loves the Magic Potion look but wants a larger isopod
  • Bioactive setup builders wanting a European-appropriate, attractive cleanup crew
  • Collectors building a distinctive or pale Armadillidium collection
  • Keepers wanting reliable, prolific colony growth with large broods

Not ideal for:

  • High-humidity tropical setups (their European needs conflict with constant wetness — high humidity disrupts moulting)
  • Keepers who tend to overwater (they prefer drier conditions with a moist corner)
  • Anyone wanting non-rolling fast surface species (these are rolling pill isopods)

Realistic Expectations

The pale, yellow-marked colouration is the star. Set expectations toward the soft, semi-transparent, magical appearance rather than bold pattern — that delicate look is precisely the appeal. Colouration develops as juveniles mature, and intensity varies a little between individuals.

It's distinctive but genuinely easy. Don't be put off by how striking it looks — the depressum Magic Potion is hardy, forgiving, and beginner-friendly. A distinctive species that's actually accessible is a big part of its appeal.

It prefers drier conditions, not constant wetness. As a European species, the Magic Potion does better with a drier moisture gradient and good ventilation than uniform dampness — high humidity genuinely causes moulting problems. If you've kept tropical species, err drier and ensure good airflow.

It's larger than the vulgare Magic Potion. If you've seen the more common vulgare form, expect a noticeably bigger isopod here — a more substantial version of the same beautiful look.

Expect prolific, quick breeding. As an easy breeder with large broods, established colonies build steadily and reliably — genuinely satisfying, and quick to become a self-sustaining display population.

Building Your Setup

Great quality for the price.
Size: Large, Color: Black
All I have to say about this suit is WOW! I lost a good chunk of weight and needed a new suit for an event. Given the price I gave this a shot, and I am really impressed with the quality for the cost. The size is perfect, and the pants are comfortable with an internal elastic that looks and feels nice. The design makes it so the pants don’t slip down with nylon and silk shirts. Looks just as good (if not better) than suits in the $300 price range. I can’t speak for the other colors, but the black suit is exactly what I needed. Let’s see how long the suit lasts!

Amazing suit for the price
Size: Large, Color: Black
So I didn't really need a suit for anything. But I've been wanting one just in case. As such, I wasn't willing to spend a lot. Yet I still wanted to look good when I wore it. This suit is amazing. I honestly would fit between a medium and a large, and with my current trend down in weight, I may buy an additional in medium(I mean, for under $100, why not?). While my shoulders have always been a little wide for what fits my waist, the large seems to accommodate even more than I need. I worry if the medium will be too tight, but that's for another day. The pants are a little long, to be expected considering I generally wear 30' pants. Easy to hem. The vest seemed a little loose, until I found the adjustment in the back. Now it is perfect. I may still need to go to a tailor for a more custom fit, but for the price it can't be beat. And I of course haven't tied a tie since I was 16, so time to relearn that. As far as quality goes, the fabric and stitching all appear to be excellent. I went with the black, as I don't particularly look great in gray, and navy out here seems more suited for church than anything else. The quality of black is excellent. The quality of the pants is good, but I will still be favoring my dress pants that already fit well. I especially love the angle of the beast cut(whatever it is called). Whether I choose the vest or not, the black contrast with all of my dress shirts is fantastic. I will include photos sometime when I'm not too self-conscious about taking selfies.

This is the second suit we bought by Lupurty. The first was dark navy and fit so well and looked so good that we got one in black for our son’s wedding!
