DESCRITION

Minerals are elements that originate from the earth, which play an essential role in life and must be consumed, as they cannot be made by living organisms.

But yet surprisingly; minerals are often overlooked by mainstream nutrition advice, even though they play a critical role in tens of thousands of biochemical reactions in the body.

Different minerals have different benefits, so ensuring a balanced intake of major and trace minerals is much more effective (and safer) than 'mega-dosing' an individual mineral.

And that's because minerals work hand-in-hand to execute many important jobs. But minerals are also antagonists, meaning that if one is too high (toxic) it can cause other/s to become too low (depleted) and vice versa (aka 'mineral derangement'), which has been shown to lead to poor health outcomes and behavioural conditions.

Some of the symptoms related to a lack of dietary minerals are:

  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Depression
  • Low back pain
  • Poor digestion
  • Poor bone health
  • Poor blood sugar management

POTASSIUM

Potassium is an essential mineral that's needed to regulate:

  • Water balance
  • Blood pressure
  • Levels of acidity
  • Neuromuscular function
  • Electrical impulses (that regulate the heart)

But even with such an important role, only 3% of adults and 10% of children are estimated to meet recommended Potassium intakes, with research suggesting that low potassium intake is strongly linked to:

  • Increased heart complications
  • Elevated risk of developing Diabetes
  • Reduced ability to manage blood sugar

Clinical trials have also shown that people who carry excess body weight have lower levels of potassium in their blood when compared to healthy individuals.

MAGNESIUM

Even though magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body and is the fourth most common mineral (after calcium, sodium and potassium) it is the second most common nutritional deficiency in developed countries.

Mineral Complex contains Magnesium Malate (which is a type of Magnesium bound to Malic Acid to enhance absorption) and has been shown to:

  • Relieve anxiety
  • Increase energy
  • Alleviate depression
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase exercise tolerance

Some people also use Magnesium Malate to alleviate the symptoms of Fibromyalgia and/or CFS as it has shown to be effective in supporting mitochondrial function.

ZINC

ZINC is an essential mineral that's found throughout the body playing a key role in (almost) all aspects of health and is required as a cofactor for more than 300 different enzymes (which in laymen's terms means that it's required for their 'proper functioning').

Research has shown that Zinc helps our immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses, support the production of testosterone as well as make proteins and DNA (the genetic material in all cells).

But seeing as Zinc is such an 'essential' mineral, you may be surprised to learn that (an estimated) 30% of the world's population do not get enough dietary Zinc, which is why Mineral Complex contain Zinc Picolinate (a highly absorbable form of Zinc) that's been show to support:

  • Immunity
  • Protein synthesis
  • Cognitive function
  • Maintenance of normal bones
  • Fertility and reproductive system
  • Maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails

BORON

Boron is a trace mineral with diverse and vitally important roles in metabolism which are required for healthy:

  • Bone maintenance
  • Enzyme production
  • Hormone production
  • VITAMIN D metabolism
  • Testosterone and Oestrogen balance

Research has shown that supplementation with Boron can increase free testosterone levels as well as lowering inflammation, both of which can positively affect body composition.

Boron can also help to enhance dietary calcium absorption.

IODINE

Iodine is a trace mineral, that's essential to human life. It is found in small amounts in the thyroid gland, and helps make the thyroid hormones which regulate growth and metabolism:

  • Thyroxine (T4)
  • Triiodothyronine (T3)

To highlight just how essential Iodine is, it's important to note that every cell in the human body has a receptor for thyroid hormones and can have a significant impact on:

  • Obesity
  • Weight control
  • Body composition

It's estimated that 2 Billion people worldwide suffer from Iodine deficiency (making it a serious public health problem) and according to this article in the Lancet by Venderpump 'is the most common cause of mental impairment worldwide'.

SELENIUM

Selenium is a trace mineral and critical constituent of over 20 'seleoproteins' that contribute to:

  • Reproduction
  • DNA synthesis
  • Thyroid hormone metabolism
  • Managing oxidative damage and infection

Recent studies have shown that Selenium also plays a role in managing body composition, with findings suggesting that high dietary Selenium intake is associated with reductions in waist circumference and body fat levels.

Other research has found that higher intakes of Selenium are beneficially correlated with lower insulin resistance (a hormone that controls blood sugar and is involved in diabetes).

Selenium intake has also been shown to modulate thyroid hormones, which translates into improved metabolism and reductions in body weight.

It's estimated that 1 Billion people worldwide have a Selenium deficiency, with the condition becoming more prevalent in the UK due to the low concentration of Selenium in our soil.

CHROMIUM

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that supports several important functions in the body. For example, Chromium is part of a molecule called Chromodulin, which helps the hormone insulin perform its actions in the body.

*Insulin is a molecule released by the pancreas and is important in the body’s processing of carbohydrates, fat and protein.

In healthy people, the insulin hormone has an important role in signalling the body to bring blood sugar into the cells of the body. Whereas in people with diabetes, there are problems with the body’s normal response to insulin.

Several studies have indicated that taking Chromium supplements can improve blood sugar for those with Diabetes, with one study finding that 16 weeks of 200 μg/day of Chromium (which is the dose that's in Mineral Complex) was able to lower blood sugar and insulin while improving the body’s response to insulin.

Other research has shown that those with higher blood sugar levels and lower insulin sensitivity may respond better to Chromium supplementation.

Additionally, in a large study of over 62,000 adults, the likelihood of having diabetes was 27% lower in those who took dietary supplements containing Chromium. And when you consider that over 40% of the adult population in the UK is either Diabetic/pre-Diabetic, you can see why optimising Chromium intake is a no-brainer.

Interestingly, the absorption of chromium in the intestines is very low, with less than 2.5% of ingested chromium being absorbed. However, Chromium Picolinate (which is in Mineral Complex) is an alternate form of Chromium that is very well absorbed.

MANGANESE

Manganese is an essential trace mineral needed for healthy:

  • Skin
  • Bone
  • Cartilage formation
  • Blood sugar management

Manganese is also involved in activating one of the body’s main antioxidants; Superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Research has shown that people with Diabetes may have lower levels of Manganese which can affect how they respond to the consumption of carbohydrates.

However, supplementing with Manganese (at the dose found in Mineral Complex) has shown to support healthy blood glucose management and improve the response to carbohydrates.

MOLYBDENUM

Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral, that predominantly converts into an enzyme activating cofactor when consumed. The enzymes and their functions are as follows:

Sulfite oxidase (converts sulfite to sulfate) preventing the dangerous build-up of sulfites in the body.

Aldehyde oxidase (breaks down aldehydes) which can be toxic to the body. It also helps the liver break down alcohol and some drugs.

Xanthine oxidase (converts xanthine to uric acid) helping break down nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA) when they’re no longer needed.

Mitochondrial amidoxime reducing component (mARC). This enzyme’s function isn’t fully understood, but it’s thought to remove toxic by-products of metabolism.

Molybdenum also helps to metabolise dietary iron.

Fun, both heartwarming and heartbreaking
Format: Kindle
Only my second first person written selection, I am still getting used to that aspect, but unlike my first, I enjoyed that the story was told through both MCs. A great enemies to lovers, forced proximity, fated love etc, that resonated to me. There were some small twists that I could see coming, but also a few that I didn’t quite see until the characters were also seeing. Personally, I am more interested in the story than the spice, but with that said, it was well seasoned! I am kind of new to the spice world so I can’t say for sure how this would rate, but it definitely had some heat. I am very glad I happened across this author, and I do plan on also reading the next book….if nothing else, just to see for myself the “transformation” of the characters I’ve grown to love!

😍😍 BEST DEBUT NOVEL EVER
Format: Paperback
I’m having trouble finding accurate words to describe the way this book made me feel, but I am going to do my best. To start off with basic elements, the character and world building are phenomenal. I feel a strong bond to not only the two main characters, Ara and Rogue, but to each and every character introduced throughout the book. The author did a stellar job of giving each of them unique personhood. All of the scenes are beautifully described. So much so that throughout the entirety of the book, I could see every scene: the towns, the castles, the meadows, the landscape. I have had difficulty with this and with distinguishing between outlying characters while reading in the past, but I did not have to think to remember details of world or character building because they flowed naturally within the story and were described well. I have read book series before that made me want to be a part of that world, but I actually felt like I got to step into Auryna and Ravaryn! The plot twists!! Although this is not a suspense novel, it still had me on a rollercoaster of emotions and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I haven’t cried actual tears over a book since I was in high school (and I’ve read a LOT). This book finally broke the floodgates in the final few chapters. Multiple times. And we love a good cliffhanger. It truly made me FEEL. THE SPICE is a solid 3.5/5. Some of the scenes had me flushed, some had me taking notes, some just had my jaw slack and my mouth hanging open. Bravo, JD Linton, bravo. The relationships: friendships, family, romantic, ALL of the relationships in this book have so much meaning. The author does a great job at making you feel the love, the anger, the peace, the frustrations, the safety, the familiarity, etc. between the characters. Ara and Rogue. I can not say enough and I also do not want to say too much. Just know that I feel like I know them both, to their core. I know what their childhood looks likes, their darkest moments, their biggest fears, their dreams and passions, what they want in life… The POV switches were seamless. I am so happy this author decided to let us see from both sets of eyes. I can not wait for book two after that cliffhanger. And there is SO much potential for at least one prequel, I can’t wait to see where this author goes! I hope this series continues and flourishes. Fingers crossed!

Amazing!
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
This book was phenomenal, I devoured it within a few days! For this being a debut novel, it is fantastic and I would’ve thought the author was a seasoned author. I have zero complaints about this book. Let me start by saying that the world building was phenomenal. I could picture everything in my head because of how detailed it was — that’s how good it was written. And I absolutely love the “captive/captor” trope so much, it’s become one of my favorite tropes, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book had that. I loved the banter between Rogue and Ara — they’re both snarky and witty, plus with the romantic tension, it made the dialogue that much better. Speaking of romantic tension, yes there is spice but not so much of it that it overrides the plot, which I loved. For me, this would probably be on the 3/5 level of spice. This book had a ton of plot twists and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

High on Tropes and Satisfaction
Format: Kindle
This is a great Romantasy book full of action, adventure, and everything you look for in this genre. I won’t lie: it does kinda feel like the author found every common trope from every successful book of this kind and threw them all into this novel. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Especially in romance, there’s a large audience who has specific expectations, and they want them every time. Nothing wrong with that and many times I’m one of them. I have no idea what defines a spoiler honestly, so spoiler alert!!!!!!! Tropes include: Only one bed at the inn/bar Dissatisfaction with life before hunk appears Lost royalty The chosen one Montage of dress up time followed by shocked hunk Forbidden romance between two from rival peoples Power that cannot be controlled, simply guided/asked Gathering intel at the inn/bar FMC who knows how to fight/use weapons well There’s probably more but no need to list them all. Good story and I would recommend!

OUTSTANDING
Format: Kindle
This was very, very good. The world is vast and characters are complex. There is a good plot with a whole lot going on. This is well written. Good twists and turns and some heart breaking moments. You will love these characters, they have heart and loyalty. I am hoping that there will be several more books. We've yet to see anything from the Sea Court but only a mention of them here and there. The Wood Court was given a quick couple of scenes, and only as far as some warriors, we've yet to enter their court and the Shadow Court, I'm not sure if they will be a force for good or bad, but they definitely will play a much bigger role moving forward. This is primarily the Ice and Air Courts. Told in multiple views, which I loved, it gives you a chance to see things from different eyes. There's alot of political maneuvering and deception. I loved it and will pick up the next book as it becomes available. If you like The Fae and the courts, you should love this. I think the author has mucn in store for us.
