Description

Japanese Oak Wood Ash – For Indigo & Woad VatsWood ash has long been used in natural dyeing, especially in the preparation of sukumo indigo vats and in historic recipes for woad and indigo dyeing, such as those from 18th century southern France. Our wood ash is produced from Japanese oak trees and is carefully dried and stored to preserve its alkalinity. Rich in alkaline compounds, primarily potassium carbonate, wood ash is an essential natural material for adjusting the pH of fermentation vats.

Wood ash has long been used in natural dyeing, especially in the preparation of sukumo indigo vats and in historic recipes for woad and indigo dyeing, such as those from 18th-century southern France. Our wood ash is produced from Japanese oak trees and is carefully dried and stored to preserve its alkalinity.

Rich in alkaline compounds, primarily potassium carbonate, wood ash is an essential natural material for adjusting the pH of fermentation vats. It helps create the alkaline environment needed to reduce indigo pigment into its soluble form so fibers can absorb deep, lasting blues.

Historical & Traditional Notes

  • Used in traditional Japanese Hakkō-date fermentation vats, where indigo leaves are combined with wood ash and other organic materials.

  • Found in European indigo and woad recipes, where ash acted as the primary alkaline source before the availability of soda ash.

  • The composition of ash depends on the wood used; Japanese oak ash is especially prized for dyeing because of its high, balanced alkalinity.

Helpful and interesting introduction
Format: Paperback
This is a good quick introduction. A good supplement to a course on modernist literature or art. What is important is that it shows the Modernist project as something that encompassed art, literature, psychology, science, and politics--in other words, it contextualizes the movement.

So glad I bought this!
Format: Paperback
I am a lit teacher at an independent school, and was able to use this book to link the literature and the art of the modern movement. My students loved this project - they made their own artwork for a display at school!
