Create Flawless, Splinter-Free Hinge Mortises with the Freud 5/8 Inch Down-Shear Router Bit

Eliminate surface defects and achieve professional-grade joinery with the Freud 16-102 5/8 Inch Mortising Bit. Designed specifically for discerning woodworkers, this bit utilizes a unique "down-shear" geometry. Unlike standard straight bits that can lift wood fibers and cause unsightly chipping on the surface, the 16-102 actively pushes fibers down as it cuts. This shearing action guarantees razor-sharp edges and splinter-free finishes, making it the perfect tool for routing shallow recesses in expensive plywood, delicate veneers, and solid hardwoods for hinges, locksets, and hardware plates.

Beyond its precision, this bit is built for performance. It features a wider 5/8-inch cutting diameter, allowing for efficient clearing of material in fewer passes. The cutter is engineered with deep center gullets to maximize chip removal, preventing the bit from clogging or overheating even during repetitive cuts. Protected by Freud's industrial Perma-SHIELD coating, the tool resists pitch buildup and corrosion, ensuring long-lasting durability. With a standard 1/4-inch shank, it is compatible with a wide range of CNC machines, hand-held trim routers, and table-mounted setups.

Key Features

  • Down-Shear Geometry: Pushes wood fibers down to eliminate surface splintering, essential for veneers and laminates.
  • Perma-SHIELD Coating: Non-stick red coating reduces friction, prevents heat buildup, and resists pitch.
  • Deep Center Gullets: Engineered to clear chips rapidly, preventing clogging and extending tool life.
  • 5/8 Inch Diameter: Wider profile clears material quickly for hardware installation and wide dados.
  • Splinter-Free Mortising: Specifically designed to create clean, flat-bottomed recesses for hinges and plates.
  • Versatile Compatibility: Balanced for safe use in CNC, hand-held, and table-mounted routers.

What's Included:

  • (1) 5/8 In. Diameter Mortising Bit with 1/4 In. Shank (Model 16-102)

Pro-Tip: The 16-102 features a relatively short carbide height of 1/2". This is intentional for hinge mortising, but it limits the bit's depth capacity. Never attempt to cut a groove deeper than the 1/2" carbide length, as the steel shank will rub against the wood, causing friction burns and potentially ruining your workpiece.

Best budget friendly matcha
Size: 2.1 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 2.1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I was skeptical, but it turned out to be very good for a budget friendly matcha. It was very smooth and wasnt gritty. Had a slight bitterness but not in an unbearable way. And did not have that strong grassy taste that alot of cheaper matchas have. I will definitely be repurchasing

Size: 2.1 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 2.1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
this matcha is okay which is expected for its price. it’s not the usual authentic japanese matcha. it’s made in china. it is a bit better than i expected! other matcha powders are pretty expensive and it shows in the taste. this matcha did surprisingly have a nice green color. it was darker than i expected and didn’t have a yellow hue which i don’t like. it seems fresh. i don’t know if it gave me energy. i am currently drinking some in the evening and i don’t feel much of a difference as i type this. i used about two heaping spoonfuls and a half (not really a spoonful. yk that little wooden scoop.. it’s called a chashaku) and the taste wasn’t that strong but maybe i used too much water when i mixed it. if the taste were stronger i would give this 4 or 5 stars. i like a noticeable matcha taste. i would say it’s not very strong at all but i’ll take it for this price if i’m on a budget. i paired it with torani almond syrup and i feel like i can taste the syrup more and i didn’t even add that much. like i said, i’ll take it for this price or cheaper but i wouldn’t pay more than $15 for it. i would buy again if i’m looking for something less expensive. but if not, i’d say it’s better to splurge a bit if you’re picky about the taste strength !

Great Quality
Flavor Name: Ceremonial Barista, Size: 1.06 oz
I’ve tried a few matcha brands and this one really stood out. The color is a beautiful, vibrant green, which already says a lot about the quality. The taste is smooth and fresh, not bitter, and it blends really well whether I’m making drinks hot or iced. You can tell it’s a high-quality, ceremonial grade matcha. I also really love that it’s from a small business, it makes the whole experience feel more intentional and special. Definitely something I’ll keep repurchasing! 🍵✨

High quality Matcha
Flavor Name: Ceremonial Barista, Size: 1.06 oz, Flavor Name: Ceremonial Barista, Size: 1.06 oz
Edit: I tried this matcha twice now, and it’s perfect! No lumps, excellent taste, froths well! Everything you could imagine. I used one teaspoon, and 20 oz of water heated to 160°F, sifted the teaspoon of matcha into a matcha bowl, used my bamboo whisk, and poured over milk with a bit of agave nectar. I’m very pleased with the results. This is fine matcha! /// This appears great and high quality, I haven’t tried it but will do a side by side to see how well it froths compared to the matcha I have on hand. I will come back with further information, so far it smells and looks wonderful.
