Подорожі Джорджа Орвелла (1903—1950) шахтарськими містечками північної частини Англії описані у творі 'Дорогою до Віґан-Пірсу' (1937). У Віґані Орвелл відвідав безліч будинків, в яких жили робітники, зробив докладні записи про житлові умови та заробітну плату. Він спустився у вугільну шахту Брін-Холл, читав звіти про умови праці на шахтах і медичні документи робітників.
