German WWII Postcard of Knight’s Cross Recipient Oberst Herbert Ihlefeld w/Candid Photograph-Ihlefeld was a German Luftwaffe military aviator during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, a fighter ace listed with 130 enemy aircraft shot down in over 1,000 combat missions. Depending on source, he claimed seven to nine aerial victories in the Spanish Civil War, and during World War II, 67 on the Eastern Front and 56 on the Western Front, including 15 four-engine bombers and 26 Supermarine Spitfires. He survived being shot down eight times during his 1,000 combat missions. He survived the war and was promoted to Oberst in 1945. After the war he joined the Bundesluftwaffe, and continued flying in civilian life until 1984. He died in 1995 at the age of 81. This postcard is a portrait from Hoffman studios. The photo is still in excellent condition with no fading. The reverse of the postcard is set up in the traditional style with room for a note and the address, with the studio information separating the two halves. An interesting display piece.
