Publishers Description

Full-color photographs and details of antique powder horns from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Over 180 powder horns are included in this full-color, beautifully illustrated book. Powder Horns: Documents of History emphasizes the beauty of these handmade works of art as well as their historical significance. Unlike other works that have focused solely on the artistic merit of these creations, author Tom Grinslade relates each horn, as much as possible, to where it was made and the events that were occurring at the time. Horns from the 17th century to the first quarter of the 19th century are included, representing the period from Queen Anne's War to the Revolutionary War and beyond into the early years of our nation.

Powder horns with inscriptions, often identifying the owner and/or maker, a date and a location, offer the greatest possibility for additional research and so are heavily represented here. Whenever possible, information on the owner or maker is presented along with details of each horn's design. A broad group of horns, including very plain as well as elaborately engraved horns, has been included in an attempt to illustrate the historical events that took place as our nation developed.

Brief measurements and details about each horn are recorded. The length is measured to the nearest inch from the tip of the base along an imaginary centerline. Also given are the diameter of the base and the number of pegs or pins used to attach the base-plug to the horn. The inscriptions, if any, are recorded, reproducing as much as possible the styling of the letters. The majority of horns featured come from the author's collection, but a number of other notable horns have been included to offer a more complete study. Over 90 percent of the horns have never been published before and so will be of particular interest to students and collectors.

Chapters include: Pennsylvania screw-tip horns, Southern powder horns, Tansel family horns, New England horns, Indian horns, storage horns, rum horns, priming horns, and buffalo horns. The two largest chapters feature French and Indian War horns and Revolutionary War horns. Chapter ten includes information on the care of horn objects, disposition of collections and some questionable powder horns. Also included are a bibliography and indices of names and places appearing on the horns.

This study offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the original owners of these horns, as well as their makers. Particularly evocative are the unfinished horns, leaving one to wonder why they weren't finished and what happened to interupt the work. Powder Horns: Documents of History sheds light on an important cultural artifact and the times during which they were produced. Perhaps unlike any other publication, this book give these artifacts the importance they deserve as both the creative expression of their maker and as a document of the culture that produced them.

Excellent Sound Deadening Material!
Style: 10 SqFt, Style: 10 SqFt
I installed Kilmat Sound Deadening in my truck, and I’m extremely impressed with the results. The material is thick, pliable, and easy to cut to fit doors, floor panels. It sticks very well to metal surfaces and doesn’t peel, even after heating it slightly to make it more flexible. After installation, I immediately noticed a reduction in road noise and vibrations. Worth the money!!

A Must Have For Car Restorations!
Style: 80 mil 36 sqft, Style: 80 mil 36 sqft
I have been installing this matting in my 74 Datsun 260Z restore and very pleased with the ease of application and overall quality. My car has bedliner coating inside and this stuff sticks extremely well and is easy to trim and shape as well. I have just started installing it and using the rollers to work it in place but I can already tell a difference with just the little bit I have added....has reduced the resonance in the metal already. It's not a fast process but know it will be very rewarding once complete.

Great sound mat for the price!
Style: 50 mil 50 SqFt, Style: 50 mil 50 SqFt
This is a good product. Many people go with KILMAT because of the value to price point. I did as well. When you clean the surface (in my case it was all painted metal) this stuff sticks very well. I do recommend you use a seam roller of some type, I used Lumiteco 3 piece roller set. This will help with adhesion and mostly flatten the overlapped edges. It also helps you see where you have rolled as it leaves little grooves. The difference when we had no sound mats and after was very impressive. We haven't finished our install yet and it is quieter than when we had an interior in the van. There are thicker mats available in other brands, but this will work great for our van build, but this helps keep the weight down. It is quality material, just be careful when you are removing the backing, the edge of the foil face can cut you. I suggest you layout where you are installing the mat and cut to fit. From what I have read, you don't need to cover every inch in the vehicle, just spot install for a big difference. I chose to cover most surfaces to help keep sound out when we are sleeping in the van. We haven't finished putting the van yet, but we have driven it around and been very satisfied with this product.

Excellent sound deadening mats
Style: 80 mil 36 sqft, Style: 80 mil 36 sqft
Purchased these for a 2020 Lexus RX350 due to the hollow sound of the car doors when shutting. They sounded cheap. The mats are super sticky and I applied them when the doors were hot from sitting in the sun. They alubutyl sticks like crazy and the end result was perfect. Now I have solid sounding doors. Good quality product.
