Repashy Soilent Green — Meal Replacement Gel for Algae & Aufwuchs Feeders

Repashy Soilent Green is a premium meal replacement gel premix designed for algae and aufwuchs-eating species — fish, freshwater shrimp, amphibians (especially tadpoles), and various reptiles and invertebrates. Made in the USA by Repashy Ventures, Soilent Green has been a hobbyist favourite for over a decade, particularly among aquarists keeping plecos, otocinclus, mbuna cichlids, hillstream loaches, and freshwater shrimp. The combination of natural algae ingredients, marine proteins, and a long-lasting gel format makes it one of the most versatile premium foods on the market.

"Aufwuchs" is the German term used to describe the layer of algae, microorganisms, and small invertebrates that grows on submerged surfaces — the natural diet of many algae-grazing fish and amphibian larvae. Soilent Green is specifically formulated to replicate this nutritional profile, providing a complete diet for species that would otherwise graze on biofilms and algal mats in the wild.

Available as a powdered premix — just add boiling water to create a firm gel that can be cut into cubes, shredded, or dried into long-lasting jerky.

What Soilent Green Does

Soilent Green serves three main purposes for different keeper groups:

1. Primary diet for algae-eating fish. Plecos, otocinclus, hillstream loaches, mbuna cichlids, and other algae-grazing species need a vegetable-heavy diet that most generic fish foods can't provide. Soilent Green's algae-rich formulation (spirulina, chlorella, algae meal) gives these fish the kind of nutrition they'd get from natural algae mats — but with added protein from krill and squid meal that maintains health and growth.

2. Excellent food for freshwater shrimp. Cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp, bee shrimp, crystal shrimp, and other freshwater invertebrates respond strongly to Soilent Green. The algae and protein blend supports moulting and reproduction in dense shrimp colonies. Many shrimp breeders consider it one of the best foods available for their colonies.

3. Tadpole and amphibian larvae food. One of Soilent Green's most respected uses is raising amphibian larvae — particularly dart frog tadpoles. Many serious breeders use it as the primary food source, citing strong feeding response, excellent growth rates, and good metamorph quality. Combined with Repashy Spawn & Grow, it's been the foundation diet for countless successful dart frog breeding programmes.

Why Repashy Soilent Green?

One product feeds and hydrates. Like all Repashy gels, Soilent Green is approximately 75% water once made. This makes it ideal for keeping aquatic and semi-aquatic animals well-hydrated while simultaneously providing nutrition — no separate water dish required for tadpoles or amphibian larvae.

Algae-rich, plant-based foundation. Spirulina algae, chlorella algae, and algae meal are the first three ingredients — making this a genuinely algae-focused food rather than a fish food with token plant content. Algae-grazing species respond strongly to this formulation.

Marine protein from krill and squid. Krill meal and squid meal provide high-quality marine protein with natural carotenoid content. This supports growth, colour development, and overall health in ways that purely vegetarian foods can't match.

Carotenoid pigments for colour. Beyond the marine proteins, Soilent Green includes natural carotenoid sources (paprika, marigold flower, calendula flower, turmeric) that can enhance colour in fish, shrimp, and even some amphibians. Many shrimp keepers specifically choose it for the colour-enhancing properties.

Easy preparation and storage. Mix powder with boiling water (1:3 ratio), let cool to firm gel, cut into portions. Refrigerator storage for up to 2 weeks, freezer storage for up to 6 months. Make large batches and freeze portions for ongoing use.

Strong feeding response across species. Reports from aquarists consistently note that fish, shrimp, and tadpoles eat Soilent Green more enthusiastically than many generic fish foods. The natural ingredients and gel texture both contribute to high acceptance rates.

Which Animals Benefit?

Freshwater fish. Particularly suited to algae and detritus feeders:

  • Plecos (bristlenose, common, and specialty plecos)
  • Otocinclus catfish
  • Hillstream loaches and similar grazers
  • Mbuna cichlids (Lake Malawi vegetarian cichlids)
  • Mollies, swordtails, and other livebearers
  • Goldfish and koi as a varied diet component
  • Many community fish as an algae-rich supplement

Freshwater invertebrates. Particularly valued by shrimp keepers:

  • Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)
  • Amano shrimp
  • Bee shrimp, crystal shrimp, and other Caridina species
  • Freshwater snails (mystery snails, nerites, ramshorn)

Amphibian larvae. The gold standard for many tadpole-rearing operations:

  • Dart frog tadpoles (most species)
  • Tree frog tadpoles
  • Other amphibian larvae transitioning to solid foods

Aquatic and semi-aquatic reptiles. Aufwuchs-eating species:

  • Some aquatic turtle species (particularly herbivorous)
  • Aquatic newts and salamanders

How to Prepare and Use

Standard gel preparation:

  1. Mix 1 part powder with 3 parts boiling water in a heat-safe container
  2. Stir thoroughly until smooth and well-blended
  3. Either let cool in the container, or pour immediately into a mould or shallow dish
  4. Let sit at room temperature until firm (typically 10–15 minutes)
  5. Cut into cubes, shred, slice into slabs, or use as needed

Adjusting firmness: Use more water for softer gel (ideal for tadpoles and small invertebrates), less water for firmer gel (better for chunky feeding and longer-lasting placement in tanks).

Jerky preparation (long-lasting): Slice prepared gel into ¼-inch thick strips and dry in an oven or dehydrator at 65°C (150°F) for 8–12 hours until completely dry. Jerky lasts much longer in tanks than fresh gel and provides slow-release feeding for grazing species.

Storage: Treat finished gel as fresh food. Store sealed in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Many keepers prepare a large batch, cut into cubes, and freeze portions individually for ready use.

Feeding frequency:

  • Adult fish: Once daily or every other day, in amounts consumed within 5–10 minutes
  • Shrimp colonies: Small amounts 2–3 times weekly
  • Tadpoles: Once or twice daily, small amounts
  • Mixing approach: Many keepers combine Soilent Green with other Repashy gels (Community, Super Green, Spawn & Grow) for varied nutrition

Soilent Green for Colour-Boosting in Isopods

Beyond its primary aquatic uses, Soilent Green has gained popularity among isopod keepers as a natural colour-enhancement supplement. The dense concentration of carotenoid sources — spirulina algae, paprika, marigold flower, calendula flower, and turmeric — provides the same pigment compounds that intensify colour in fish and shrimp. When fed regularly to colour-morph isopods, these carotenoids accumulate in the exoskeleton and can noticeably deepen and enrich pigmentation over successive moults.

This makes Soilent Green particularly valuable for keepers of premium colour-morph isopods where colour saturation is part of the appeal:

  • Orange and warm-toned species: Amber Duckies, Powder Oranges, and orange Porcellio morphs respond well to the carotenoid content, which can deepen and saturate their orange tones.
  • Yellow-patterned Cubaris species: Jupiter Isopods, Lemon Blues, and other yellow-banded morphs benefit from the carotenoid support, particularly Lemon Blues whose yellow is notably diet-dependent.
  • Red-marked species: Klugii varieties (Dubrovnik, Montenegro) and other isopods with red colouration can show improved red intensity with carotenoid-rich feeding.
  • Pastel and selectively-bred morphs: Designer morphs where colour is the entire appeal benefit most from consistent carotenoid supplementation.

How to use Soilent Green for isopod colour boosting:

Offer small amounts of prepared gel 1–2 times per week as a supplementary food alongside their primary diet of leaf litter, rotting wood, and standard isopod nutrition. A small cube placed in the enclosure will be grazed on over a day or two. Crumble dried gel into substrate as occasional enrichment. The carotenoid effects build gradually over multiple moults — expect to see colour intensification over 2–3 months of consistent feeding rather than overnight results.

Important context — primary diet still matters. Soilent Green is a colour-boosting supplement, not a replacement for proper isopod nutrition. Your isopods still need their staple diet of hardwood leaf litter, decaying wood, calcium, and protein. For dedicated isopod-focused nutrition, Repashy Morning Wood is specifically formulated for detritivore biology with the cellulose-rich content isopods need. Many serious colour-morph keepers use both: Morning Wood as the regular calcium-fortified supplement, Soilent Green as a periodic carotenoid boost for visual enhancement.

For dart frog keepers running bioactive vivariums, Soilent Green serves triple duty — feeding the tadpoles during their aquatic life stage, supporting carotenoid colour in any display isopods, and complementing the springtail and isopod cleanup crew in the terrestrial enclosure.

How Soilent Green Fits With Other Repashy Products

If you keep multiple species across aquatic, terrestrial, and invertebrate setups, the different Repashy gels each serve specific purposes:

  • Soilent Green (this product): Aquatic species — fish, shrimp, tadpoles. Algae-focused with marine proteins. Best for aufwuchs eaters.
  • Repashy Morning Wood: Terrestrial isopods, springtails, and detritivores. Cellulose-rich with calcium fortification. Best for invertebrate setups.
  • Repashy Bug Burger: Feeder insects (crickets, roaches) and general detritivores. Calcium-fortified. Best for feeder breeding and mixed cleanup duty.

Many serious hobbyists keep all three on hand — Soilent Green for the aquarium, Morning Wood for the isopod culture, Bug Burger for the cricket colony. They're complementary rather than competitive products.

Pairs Well With

For aquarists and amphibian keepers using Soilent Green, additional supplementary feeding works well:

For invertebrate keepers maintaining mixed setups, Soilent Green can be used alongside the broader range of substrate and supplementary products in our accessories collection.

For dart frog and amphibian keepers running bioactive vivariums, pair Soilent Green (for tadpole stage) with Dwarf White Isopods and springtails for the terrestrial cleanup crew — these three together support frog husbandry from tadpole to adult.

Honestly, this is pretty nice!
Color: Black, Color: Black
At first I was a little disappointed in the design of this device because the mat and the charger are two separate pieces; but the magnet that is connecting them together is pretty strong, so I ended up not minding it. The magnet in the charger is pretty strong too, though, so the whole thing tends to lift up when you pick up your phone - this is my first MagSafe charger, so perhaps that is standard with these, I wouldn't know. As you can see in the picture, this isn't your standard mouse pad. It's leather on one side and felt on the other (you can pick which side you want to face up, which is a nice design feature, I suppose). It's smooth and wipes off easily but really collects fingerprints and hairs. It's also a good size. Not too big, not too small. I was a little worried because it's smaller than my older mousepad but I haven't suffered for it. I may even prefer this smaller size if I'm being honest. I'm not sure if I like the feeling of the leather side against my arm/wrist, though. The mouse has no problem reading it but it's just not very soft. I do notoriously dislike change though so maybe that's just a me problem LOL. All in all I'm happy with this and would suggest it!

Still Usefil for a Samsung S24 Ultra User
Color: Black
The Charging Pad: The pad is super flat (nearly the same thickness as the pad) and looks nice next to it or a similar mouse and keyboard pad. It works perfectly for my Samsung S24 Ultra without a case on it, but having a 'magsafe' style case would improve the experience. You do have to take a second to get the alignment right. It uses USB-C instead of cheaping out with a micro, and the status light is helpful. I don't think I own anything that can charge in the headphone area, and in case you're wondering, neither spot will charge a Samsung smartwatch (as expected). I'd nearly recommend this just for the charging pad since it's so unobtrusive on the desk. Just remember you'll need to route that wire out of the top of it somewhere. The mouse pad: The size is probably perfect for a typical keyboard and mouse user. I always have a 3D mouse on the left, and an extra long Coursair keyboard, so I prefer having a gigantic mat for all of that. But there is one feature of this mouse pad that I like more than most. The material doesn't attract every spec of dirt and hair in the universe, and it's easy to wipe off. Because of this, I use the pad under my 3D mouse and keyboard, with a larger full-desk pad underneath (including the mouse area). The felt material on the back keeps this locked to my desk, and unlike a rubberized pad, isn't going to turn into glue after a few years. I did test my mouse on the pad, and it feels fairly good. It's not too smooth, and is a bit easier on your hand, but very serious gamers may take some time to adjust.
