A man wearing a headscarf, thobe (ankle-length shirt) and a suit jacket stands to the right of a large thoroughbred camel with a rough rope halter. The camel belongs to an Abu Dhabi sheikh and has been left to pasture on this island. The light coloured camel has a distinctive pattern of thick, darker hair growing on its hump and along the back and front of its neck. The ground below the camel is covered in fine sand dotted with small vegetation. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.
