The opening verses of the best-known of all Christ’s sermons were handled by many of the Puritans, for the Beatitudes gave full scope to the combination of sound doctrine, practical wisdom and heart-searching application which characterized their preaching.

To these general Puritan characteristics, Thomas Watson added certain of his own: a master of a terse, vigorous style and of a beauty of expression, he could speak not only to win men’s under-standing but also to secure a place for the truth in their memories. More than most of his generation he sought to follow the example of Christ’s teaching by employing all manner of illustrative material from common life, and with simplicity and charm he spoke words not easy to forget.

Two hundred years after Thomas Watson’s death, William Jay of Bath said that he could go to any one of his books and ‘find it ever fresh, pointed and instructive.’

The Beatitudes, first published in 1660, used to be one of the rarest of Watson’s works. This clothbound edition largely follows the revised format of the Trust’s first edition of 1971, with some additional editorial notes.

______________

Thomas Watson (c. 1620-1686), the Puritan preacher and author, was probably born in Yorkshire, although the exact place and date of his birth are unknown. He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (BA, 1639; MA, 1642), where he was apparently a diligent student. Certainly his intellect is apparent in his writings, which show a profound grasp of the English language, as well as a solid understanding of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. He quotes from the early church fathers, and his familiarity with the breadth of the scriptural canon is stunning. Cross-references from the entire biblical corpus are sprinkled throughout his sermons, revealing a deep understanding of many texts obscure to most modern day Bible students. A solid understanding of history, botany, medicine, physics, the classics, logic, and various trades are revealed in his sermons.

______________

‘Thomas Watson’s deep spirituality, pithy remarks, terse style, impressive depth, and beauty of expression make him one of the most irresistible and readable of all Puritans. This exposition of Matthew 5:1-10 overflows with spiritual instruction. Every family should have a copy.’ JOEL R. BEEKE

Great For Dry Hair
I've never tried Batana Oil before, so I had no idea what to expect. It's a great oil for my hair. I love that it is all-natural oil and is more like a paste. It spreads easily on my hair. I love that I can put a tiny bit on my finger and rub it directly into my dry scalp. The oil has an interesting but pleasant smell. It's hard to describe. It reminds me a bit of a cross between coffee and cacao, but more nutty and mild. I like it. It's not too strong. The directions say to apply and leave in for 20 minutes, then wash out with a sulfate-free shampoo. I like to leave it in my hair for a day or two before washing it again. It's a great conditioning oil for dry and damaged hair. It might feel heavy on fine or thin hair, but I like it on my medium-thick hair. The only reason I dropped this a star is that I'm dubious of the claim that it promotes hair growth. I think it helps my dry hair from breaking off, but I don't think it can do much for most hair loss. However, for hair conditioning, this is definitely a five star product.

Single-ingredient moisturizing treatment with a pleasant smell
When this is described as "batana oil," that's exactly what it is. Not a dozen other ingredients with just a little bit of batana, no colors or fragrances, just batana oil. I love that about this. It's easy to use, just melt it into you hands and massage it into your scalp and hair. Folks with long hair would do well to concentrate on the ends since that's where you're less likely to get natural oil from your scalp to help keep the hair healthy. Leave it in for a bit, then wash it off in the shower with shampoo. Not at all complicated. I loved how my scalp felt afterward, definitely less itchy and "tight." as far as regrowing any hair or anything, I think the only thing that would help me is a miracle, so I'm not basing my review on that. The smell is nutty and very nice. Similar to the roasty notes of coffee or chocolate. Very pleasant and not "chemical" or perfumey smelling.

Nice Scent but Too Early to See Results
I’ve just started using this batana oil, so it’s too early to say if it actually helps with hair growth or thickness. I’ll need to use it consistently for a while before seeing real results. So far, I do like the smell—it has a nice scent and doesn’t feel overwhelming. The oil itself feels nourishing and easy to apply to the scalp and hair. The size is decent for the price, but like most hair treatments, the effectiveness will really depend on long-term use. Pros: Pleasant scent Feels nourishing on hair and scalp Easy to apply Cons: Too early to tell results Overall, it seems promising, but you’ll need to give it time to see if it actually delivers on the hair growth claims.
