Vlag van de Marshalleilanden

De vlag van de Marshalleilanden toont een donkerblauwe achtergrond met twee diagonale banen – een oranje en een witte – die vanuit de onderhoek links naar boven rechts lopen, met in de linkerbovenhoek een witte zestiendelige ster. De vlag is modern en dynamisch van ontwerp, met een sterk symbolische betekenis.

Symboliek en achtergrond

De blauwe achtergrond vertegenwoordigt de Stille Oceaan. De witte baan symboliseert vrede en de oranje baan staat voor moed en rijkdom. Samen verwijzen de schuine lijnen naar de evenaar, met de ster boven de banen die de geografische ligging van de Marshalleilanden ten noorden ervan aanduidt. De zestiendelige ster staat voor de 16 bestuurlijke districten van het land. De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 1 mei 1979, toen het land zelfbestuur kreeg binnen een overeenkomst met de Verenigde Staten.
