Celebrating the legacy of Bass Culture, the seminal 1980 album from Jamaica-born, British-based dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. Released on Island Records and produced in collaboration with Dennis Bovell (credited as Blackbeard), the album stands as a defining statement of Johnson’s politically charged poetry and the wider UK dub movement of the late 20th century. With contributions from members of Matumbi, including Bovell, Lloyd “Jah Bunny” Donaldson and Webster Johnson, the record fuses deep, roots-driven rhythms with incisive spoken word, capturing the social tensions and cultural landscape of the time.
Bass Culture is widely regarded as one of Johnson’s most powerful works, blending militant lyricism with immersive dub production. Among its standout tracks, “Reggae fi Peach” serves as a poignant tribute to Blair Peach, the New Zealand-born teacher and activist killed in London in 1979 during an Anti-Nazi League protest. The track exemplifies Johnson’s role as both poet and documentarian, addressing systemic injustice and giving voice to the Black British experience with clarity and urgency.
Decades on, the album remains a cornerstone of dub poetry and a vital piece of British musical history, continuing to influence generations of artists across genres. Its themes of resistance, identity and social justice resonate as strongly today as they did upon its original release.
This special edition marks the first time Bass Culture will be pressed on orange vinyl, released as part of Reggae Week this summer. The limited pressing brings a fresh visual dimension to this landmark recording, offering collectors and fans a new way to experience one of the most important and enduring albums in reggae and spoken word history.

Online vs Instore
Size: 40, Color: #01khaki
As to be expected, not seeing and touching before purchase. I bought three pairs of these shorts in different colors for a trip to see my son graduate from his Army National guard AIT. I would rate the overall a five based on fit, quality, and comfort. One thing that I have to mark down, is they have elastic waist bands as described! In the description pic's, they are shown with nice long tie strings. The reality of what I received is the stings are too short to tie. They were almost the same circumference as the waist band, so only able to tie in a small knot, rather than a bow. no Biggy, until it's time for the restroom. Hopefully it's self explanitory....fumbling around with a knot! waist fits as stated to my size, but add weight of wallet and cell phone, and after a few steps, they begin to slide down. Tie string a must. I will see about finding something longer, as I do like them overall!

I love them but pockets tear easily
Size: 34, Color: #01black
I love them. They look nice and they are comfortable. I bought a total of three and they're all I wear in the summer. Unfortunately the strap pockets wear out easily. On my left pocket I store a ridge wallet and my keys. For two of my most worn pair, the strap tore up to where it no longer holds the pocket closed properly. On one of those in the same pocket, a hole ended up torn in the corner. The third one I had to throw out after it shrunk after being washed improperly (can't wash them like I did my previous shorts which I washed the same way as the rest of my clothes). I think I'll continue to wear them, maybe even buy one more, until I find something better.
