De Laurenskerk is het enige gebouw dat nog over is van het middeleeuwse Rotterdamse stadscentrum. De bouw hiervan begon al in 1449 en was klaar aan het eind van de 15e eeuw. Sindsdien heeft de toren meerdere malen een spits gehad, die ook meerdere malen afgebroken is om allerlei bouwkundige redenen waaronder het gebruik van slechte kwaliteit hout.

In 1940 werd de toren zwaar beschadigd en er was sprake van dat deze gesloopt zou worden. Toch legde Koningin Juliana in 1962 de eerste steen voor de restauratie die in 1968 afgerond werd.
