Prachtig en krachtig

Quercus coccinea of scharlaken eik bereikt net als veel van zijn broeders indrukwekkende lengtes. 25 meter hoog en ongeveer de helft zo breed is geen uitzondering voor een volwassen boom. Hij groeit dus mooi piramidaal. Zet hem liefst in een niet te losse bodem van leem of klei en geef hem niet alleen de nodige ruimte maar zorg ook dat hij een plek krijgt in de zon of halfschaduw. Echt beschut hoeft scharlaken eik niet te staan want hij verdraagt zonder blikken, blozen of bibberen temperaturen die strenger zijn dan minus 20 graden Celsius en is dus prima winterhard. Net als veel andere eiken, zet ook Quercus coccinea zich in voor de biodiversiteit. Bijen en hommels vinden in deze boom een bron van stuifmeel en ook vogels gebruiken hem graag om in te nestelen of zich te verschuilen. Daarnaast eten kleine knaagdieren zoals veldmuizen en eekhoorns zijn eikels. Gaaien, duiven en ander vogelspul laten een maaltje eikels ook niet graag aan hun snavels voorbijgaan en uiteraard verzwelgen zwijnen hun eikels ook graag, al kan ik me voorstellen dat deze laatste niet geregeld in jouw tuin vertoeven.

Scharlaken pimpernel

Quercus coccinea draagt zijn naam met reden. Hele goede reden zelfs en dat is niet per se gangbaar in de bomenwereld. Het is zijn herfstkleur die het hem doet, ‘coccinea’ betekent ongeveer zoveel als ‘scharlakenrood’. De schitterende, dieprode tot roodbruine tooi die hij in de herfst draagt zou zelfs de meest succesvolle schilders doen barsten van afgunst of vervullen van inspiratie. Helaas voor hen brengt alleen onze natuur zulke uitbundige kleurenpaletten voort. Binnen de soort vind je echter wel wat variatie in intensiteit van de herfstverkleuringen. Moedertje Aarde is namelijk nogal terughoudend met het geven van garanties. Wil je zeker zijn van een overwegend rode en prachtig uitbundige herfstverkleuring, dan zou de cultivar Quercus coccinea ‘Splendens’ een uitstekende keuze zijn. Niet alleen is zijn verkleuring spectaculair, het blad blijft vaak lang hangen. Het duurt soms wel tot in het nieuwe jaar voor het uiteindelijk toegeeft aan de zwaartekracht en op de bodem neerdaalt om zijn volgende rol in de stikstofketen op zich te nemen.

4.5 stars. It's a great product. The pictures made me wonder if this was wood or plastic, but it is definitely wood. It is very attractive and fairly easy to assemble. I feel like the harnesses for the wall don't fit the wood well enough, so you can get different distances from the wall, and one of my shelves is half a centimeter below the others, even though I lined it up the same. But they are sturdy shelves and very pretty. My only real complaint is the screw anchors for the walls. They are SERIOUS. I doubt these will ever fall out of the wall, for real. The only problem is, they eat the wall as you are putting them in. If I ever decide to move these, I will have to do some serious dry wall repair.

Great shelves for the price you pay. They look good and seem to have good stability so far; we’ll see if anything falls on heads. I put a 6 pack of each up in my son’s rooms and they have all kinds of stuff from katanas to books to knick knacks on them. The shelves aren’t finished so they can leave slivers and might be harder to clean with just a cloth. They came with 6 pieces of wood, not pre-drilled or with any marks for holes, a pack of pretty tough brackets, and all mounting hardware. We used a level, hammer, stud finder, tape measure, the provided wall anchors, long and short screws, pencil, 13/64 drill bit, Phillips head bit, and drill. These helped save space and get rid of some of their clutter.
