An epistolary travelogue

'SWINTON, Andrew' [pseudonym forWilliam THOMSON]. Travels into Norway, Denmark and Russia in the years 1788, 1790, and 1791. London: Robinson. 1792.

8vo. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt and with red morocco lettering piece; pp. xxvii, 506, engraved frontispiece depicting Falconet's Peter the Great monument after a drawing by Thomson; head of spine and corners a little worn, the latter a little bumped; frontispiece and title-page with minor spotting, pp.264-266 with brown spots, otherwise very good; contemporary armorial bookplate of a member of the Duff family of Drummuir, Banff, Scotland to front pastedown.

First edition, uncommon, of this travelogue in epistolary form written by the colourful William Thomson (1746-1817) , author not only of voyage and travel literature, but also of biography and pamphlets under various pseudonyms, including Thomas Newte, Sergeant Donald Macleod, and, as here, Andrew Swinton.

Librarian to Thomas Hay, Earl of Kinnoull and Chancellor of the University of St. Andews, William Thomsom was encouraged to pursue a career in the church, with the promise of his own parish under Kinnoull's patronage. Having completed his theological studies at St Andrews, he was later ordained, this time as an assistant to James Porteous, Minister of Monivaird, Perthshire, but his personality could not be contained within the limited bounds of puritanism, what with promiscuous behaviour causing riot with his parishioners who were enraged by his erratic personality and controversial attitudes. He eventually resigned his post in 1778. Although his writing was predominantly concerned with fact, he also took a foray into the imaginative realm with his satirical novel The Man in the Moon (1783), in which a regal lunar subject comes to earth and evaluates man's intellectual capacities as well as meets Britain's first foreign secretary, Charles Fox.

In the book's preface, Thomson claimed to have gained firsthand knowledge of military life and the wars of Catherine the Great through extensive travel in Scandinavia and Russia. However, it is more likely that he acquired this information secondhand, rather than through direct experience.

Comfortable Shoes Right Out of the Box
Size: 9, Color: Black
I bought these shoes for my husband. He has a very hard time finding quality, comfortable shoes. These shoes are just as comfortable as his New Balance. He uses them as a dress shoe and wears them at least once a week. There was no break in period necessary. They were comfortable right out of the box! The only thing we didn't like was the white sole color. Once I knew he was going to keep them, I used a black sharpie marker to color the soles black. Instant amazing, comfortable dress shoes. They were well worth the cost. If you or your SO needs a comfortable pair of shoes, we highly recommend them.

Paid for new, received used.
Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Cognac, Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Cognac
Arrived dirty as if someone whore it for more than a few days. Maybe I was mistaken, but I saw nothing about “previously used” on the Amazon page. Returned it. I would suggest that the company use quality control when it comes to shipping. The shoes seem find otherwise. I ordered 9.5 and it was just a bit tight. If I reorder I will go for size 10.

Decent Shoes with Misleading Description (Not Leather)
Size: 12 Wide, Color: Black, Size: 12 Wide, Color: Black
I only look for leather when I’m purchasing dress shoes. Under the description “details” on this item it lists the shoe as leather upper and inner lining. A photo shows “genuine Napa leather lining”. If you keep reading (which I have now that I’ve received the shoes) it shows “faux leather” in the small print and that is not “leather”. I run a small leather business and this irks me because it’s clearly false advertising. The details also show the product is made in Brazil but when they arrived today, the shoe tag shows “Made in China” and “Man Made upper and lower”. I don’t hate the shoes. They look nice. What I know is they won’t hold up over time like leather, which is why the description should be accurate and not misleading.

Nautica nails it again!
Color: Cobalt Blue
Was always a fan of Nautica trusting all its products to be of superior quality, fit and finish and this one does not disappoint. Premium build quality! Looks amazing and still compact after fitting in many cards inside. Been using since a couple of months now and it's definitely been a satisfactory purchase.
