FAQ GCSE French:

What is the difference between Foundation and Higher tier?
If you sit Foundation tier the maximum grade you can achieve is a 5. The questions on Foundation tier will not cover some of the more complex vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Higher tier allows you to get a grades from 3 to 9 but if you do not get sufficient marks for a grade 3 you will be awarded a U grade for unclassified. Please ensure that you chose the correct level when completing the application process.

Do I need to be a native French speaker to take these exams?
No, the specification is designed for students who have studied French from scratch and the exams are set at a level suitable for someone in this position.

What are the arrangements for the speaking part of the exam?
The speaking part of the exam is conducted at our centre in Birmingham in April. You will be sent a date and time for your speaking exam by March. The speaking exam takes no longer than 30 minutes to complete. Please remember to bring your ID to the speaking exam.

How does the listening examination work?
Candidates are provided with their own MP3 player onto which the listening files have been downloaded; you will need to provide your own noise cancelling headphones or earphones which has a jack connector.

Am I allowed a dictionary in the exams?
No, dictionaries are not allowed for any of the exams.

Do I need additional equipment for the exams?
All answers must be written in black pen.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
