Why use a clay amphora water filter to purify tap water?

“In the UK 38.5 million plastic bottles are used every day … just over half make it to recycling, while more than 16m are put into landfill, burnt or leak into the environment and oceans each day”1.

Consumers are aware that tap water is free of bacteria and generally significantly lower in microplastics than bottled water2, 3. However, tap water can contain chloride, heavy metals, pesticide and fertiliser residues. Plus many people are put off by its aroma and taste.

Improving tap water has involved plastic water filter jugs with their over-engineered plastic replaceable filters, or expensive high-tech home installations. Is there a better solution?

Tap water can be transformed using low-tech, ancient methods such as practised by the Greeks and Romans using clay amphorae. The World Health Organisation has established that clay vessels provide the best way to reduce chloride levels in water and to keep water bacteria free. For over a decade, Natural Spa Supplies has been manufacturing clay amphorae. Laboratory tests have shown that these amphorae reduce chloride levels, ammonia and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury. There are no replacement cartridges or filters - from time to time, the amphorae just need a scrub on the outside and a sun bath! That's were the soapnuts, citric acid and scrubby come in.

Perfectly proportioned, inside and out, the amphorae have egg-shaped interiors with the point near the base. The geometry allows convection currents to circulate the water in columns, spirals and curves.

In nature, trickles and cascades of stream water spin, spiral and bow, all the while purifying the water. Added to this, the clay wall of the amphora, slightly permeable, acts like ‘skin’, sweating out toxins, leaving the freshest, purest, most delicious tasting water within.

How do you use a clay amphora? Just add tap water and let time do the rest. We will send an instruction sheet with the order. Please read this before using the amphora.

Natural Spa Supplies’ test results are based on an eight-hour cycle: Each amphora can produce three batches of purified water every day. They are available in different sizes depending on your needs. The 2 litre amphora water filter is suited to one or 2 person households and the 5 litre amphora for 2 or 3 person households. We have the larger 7 litre size in our main shop. You will need to provide your own ceramic or glass bowl to stand the amphora in.

The benefits of using a clay amphora water filter to purify tap water

Purity assured

1/ Water conditioned in our amphora overnight (8 hours) is 100% potable i.e. there is no migration of undesirable elements from the body of the amphora into the water. Please don’t just use any old clay pot for conditioning your water – some clays contain fungicides, others leach heavy metals and fluorides or contaminants from the firing process. Establishing that the clay from which our pots are made from is safe formed the foundation of our tests.

Boron ↓ 85.9
Lithium ↑ 11.8
Nitrates ↓ 83%
Magnesium ↑2%
Orthophosphate ↓ 4.5%
Chloride ↓ 50%
Ammonia ↓ 50%
Lead ↓ 78.4%
Arsenic ↓73%
Zinc ↓ 87%
pH ↑ 1 log
coliform ↓ 200% (from 200 colony forming units to zero at 22°C)
Electrolytes ↑ 5.8%
Cooling - depends on ambient temperature and humidity A test when the external temperature was 32°C and where water taken from the amphora was 19°C, a 40% reduction.

Alkalinises water

3/ On average our tap water is pH 7. Water which had been conditioned in the amphora overnight showed an increase in alkalinity to pH 7.8. Scientifically minded customers will know that the pH scale is logarithmic, and so this represents a large increase. Alkaline water is much better for us.

Reduces bacteria

WHO recommends that filtered and chlorinated water is purified in clay pots in Africa to eliminate chloride resistant bacteria, but they leave it in the pot for 2 days. If you think that you have bacteria in your tap water you should boil it and contact your water board. Contamination is surprisingly frequent.

Increases electrolytes in water

5/ The amphora conditioned water is more energetic and carries more electrical charges – the conditioned water saw a rise in conductivity from 698 to 742 uS/cm. The result indicates that the conditioned water is richer in electrolytes. By contrast reverse osmosis and distilled water are carry very low electrical currents and water treated to reduce conductivity is not as healthy for us and not considered fit for drinking.

The main increase of minerals in the amphora conditioned water was in magnesium. Magnesium is important for heart and circulation health and its bioavailability is greater in water than in food.

Cools water, improves Taste, texture and aroma

6/ Amphora purified water tastes clean, refreshing, pure and cool.

Whether you see these amphorae as purely functional or as showy decorative urns, they always look gorgeous and they are suited both modern and historical settings. When the pot is filled to the base of the neck, the water is contained within the egg shaped belly of the pot. The egg shape is the ideal flow form for the circulation of liquids in nature. Within this shape water follows its natural motion, moving in curves and spirals which aids purification.

There is some suggestion too, that following these natural flow forms, clusters of water molecules reduce in size: customers report that the amphora conditioned water feels more liquid in the mouth, more refreshing in the stomach and overall more hydrating.

Enjoy drink fresh tasting, cool, detoxified and energized water.
We invite you to conduct your own ‘blind’ taste/aroma/texture tests with your friends between freshly drawn tap, or tap water purified through other means and the water which you have conditioned in your amphora

Now you can enjoy great tasting water, plastic free forever. Have a drink on us!

Phenomenal!!!
Format: Kindle
I wholeheartedly loved this book and look forward to listening to it when the audiobook comes out! The characters are well rounded, flawed, and delicious. The dialogue was incredible and the banter was spectacular. This was a hard book to put down and I didn’t want it to end.

a work of art
Format: Kindle
This book is rich in colors, ideas, characters and story line. It gently makes you fall in love with the characters, and slowly reveals the flaws that make them more human and lovable. The story reminds us how important our words are, and how they can change lives, for better, worse, or both. It also reminds the reader of the importance of not forgetting who you are and your passions. Even in the difficult parts, it was a joy to read.. and the ice queen did not disappoint. This writing was a work of art.

Lee always knocks it out the park.
Format: Kindle
As always, When She Flies is very well written and the detail is great. I really enjoyed the little nuances in this book. Oliver had to be my favorite with his excitement. It was intriguing to see Ethan grow into more than an antagonist which is what I thought he was going to be. Sienna’s openness and honestly was refreshing and so was Jasmine’s brutal honestly which reminded me of Elena from The Brutal Truth. Overall, I loved this book.

Winter strikes again
Format: Kindle
No one writes an ice queen quite like Lee Winter. This book has less of her tongue in cheek humor and is a little more angsty. The main characters meet again by chance, or as Sienna would say, fate. Jasmine only vaguely remembers teenage Sienna, and actually thought she was a boy. Sienna, of course, remembers Jasmine because her influence changed the course of Sienna's life.

finding love after your heart crumbles
Format: Kindle
Tatum Ward is a waitress in her small town of Trove Hills, Illinois. She has a side gig of writing difficult texts for others who want to break up or quit their job or something equally difficult. She doesn’t charge people for that. She just enjoys writing, and at this point in her life, that’s all the writing she can accomplish. She lives in a cottage by her parents’ house, close enough to hear if something were to go wrong. And she is still dealing with the fact that she and her siblings have a secret brother they never knew about. Tatum’s father had admitted to an affair many years before, but he had just recently found out that it had resulted in a son, and now he wants the entire family to get together. Tatum is not ready for that. So when her favorite customer at the diner, June, gets dumped by a text that Tatum was asked to write, Tatum is devastated and apologized profusely. June is a fragrance designer who is about to travel to New York City for an important meeting about her perfumes, but she isn’t sure she can She was counting on her girlfriend for moral support. So Tatum pipes up and offers to go with her. Eleanor Chapman is a press agent for Broadway shows, and when she finds out that her occasional hookup just proposed to his girlfriend after 4 years, she sent a company-wide email congratulating him, since he’s a producer that they represent. But then Eleanor follows that up with a message to his new fiancé telling her about their relationship. Suddenly, Eleanor finds herself without a job and wanting to get out of town to clear her head. She asks on social media if anyone can watch her cats at her apartment in New York for a week, and June responds. Tatum offers up her cottage to Eleanor, and she and June can use her apartment in New York City and take care of the cats. When Eleanor comes to Trove Hills, she makes herself comfortable in Eleanor’s cottage. She is having a quiet evening with a bottle of wine and a book when she is interrupted by someone pounding on the door and asking Tatum to open up. When Eleanor doesn’t open the door, the person outside climbs in a window. And that’s how Eleanor met Carson, Tatum’s non-binary older sibling, covered in glitter. Carson apologizes for barging in, not realizing that Tatum had left town. But the attraction between Eleanor and Carson develops quickly. During the next week, the attraction between Carson and Eleanor heats up, and Tatum and June’s time in New York is productive. Tatum makes friends with one of Eleanor’s neighbors and finds herself missing her family and feeling guilty for skipping out on the reunion the way she had. And when she gets word that her sister broke her leg, Tatum heads back home on the next flight, putting her burgeoning relationship with June on hold. Back in Illinois, Eleanor decides it’s also time to head home, leaving Carson without saying anything. As everyone settles back into their lives, they all have to choose between going back to the unhappiness that caused them to make sudden life changes in the first place, or to run after the love they had found when they took chances. Anywhere You Go is a sweet rom com about upending your life and finding everything you didn’t realize you were missing. I really enjoyed this house-swap story. I thought the characters were well-rounded and interesting, and I loved the two settings. The addition of Dawn in New York added lots of fun, and the story of a secret brother of Tatum and Carson added a lot of texture to the family. I had a great time with Anywhere You Go. It was an amazing trip. Egalleys for Anywhere You Go were provided by Berkley through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.
