The Philodendron ‘Mcdowell’ is a crawling, drought-tolerant plant that has lush, heart-shaped leaves and a velvet-like texture. This tropical plant is well-known among collectors and indoor plant enthusiasts, and it is the ideal combination of easy care and captivating beauty.

This crawling hybrid is a cross between Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum. This unique origin gives ‘McDowell’ its natural adaptability to warm and humid environments, as well as being tolerant to low light; which mimics the shaded conditions of tropical forest floors.

The standout feature of the Mcdowell Philodendron plant is undoubtedly its massive, heart-shaped leaves, which can reach up to 2 feet in length when grown in ideal conditions.

These leaves have a deep green hue with prominent, white-veined patterns, and their texture resembles a velvety fabric, giving the plant an exceptionally tactile allure.

It is a terrestrial grower, which means it typically crawls along the soil rather than climbing, making it ideal for low, wide pots.

Though it rarely blooms indoors, the Philodendron 'Mcdowell' plant can produce tiny, spathe-like flowers. These blooms are not as showy as the plant's foliage and often go unnoticed, but they do emit a subtle fragrance. Flowering may occur if the plant is grown outdoors in a tropical climate or in a greenhouse that replicates its native conditions.

As an indoor plant, Philodendron ‘Mcdowell’ not only enhances the aesthetic of a space with its dramatic foliage, but it also helps purify the air by absorbing pollutants. Like other philodendrons, it plays a role in removing toxins, making it an excellent choice for improving indoor air quality. Its lush, tropical appearance adds a sense of tranquility and vibrant greenery to any interior setting.

When and How to Water Philodendron ‘Mcdowell

Like other drought-tolerant plants, the Philodendron McDowell can handle some neglect when it comes to watering. It is important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Overwatering can be more harmful than underwatering for this plant.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, you want to keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. A good rule of thumb is to water it when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. You can water it thoroughly typically for 1-2 weeks, allowing excess water to drain out of the pot to prevent root rot.

In the fall and winter, during the dormant season, the McDowell Philodendron plant doesn't need as much water. You should reduce the frequency of watering to once a week. It's essential to adjust your watering schedule based on the plant's needs and the environmental conditions. Overwatering can be more harmful than underwatering for this plant, so it's better to err on the side of slightly underwatering than overdoing it. Just keep an eye on the moisture and adjust accordingly to keep your Philodendron happy and healthy!

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Philodendron Plant

When grown indoors, it does well in bright, indirect light for at least 4-6 hours a day. You can place it near a window where it can get filtered sunlight or even a few feet away from a window with bright, indirect light.

Just avoid placing it in direct sunlight as that can scorch its leaves. If you notice the leaves turning yellow or brown, it might be getting too much light.

For outdoor cultivation, Philodendron McDowell can still do well in bright, indirect light. It's best to place it in a spot where it gets filtered sunlight or dappled shade.

If you're in a region with intense sunlight, make sure to protect it from direct sun exposure, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

Remember, the key is to provide it with the right balance of light – not too dim and not too bright.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

When it comes to soil for your Philodendron McDowell, it thrives in a well-draining potting mix. This type of soil allows excess water to drain away, preventing waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. You can also consider adding some orchid bark or charcoal to the mix to enhance aeration and drainage, promoting healthy root growth. Planet Desert specialized potting soil, opens in a new tabGo to soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive.

Your Philodendron McDowell doesn't require a lot of feeding. During the growing season in spring, you can fertilize it with a balanced NPK fertilizer diluted to half strength. Feed the plant once a year to provide it with the necessary nutrients for healthy growth. During the dormant season in fall and winter, you can reduce or stop fertilizing altogether since the plant's growth slows down during this time. Always remember to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package to avoid overfeeding, which can harm the plant. With the right soil mix and proper fertilization, your Philodendron plant will continue to thrive and grace your space with its lush green foliage.

Hardiness Zones & More

When grown indoors, with bright, indirect light keep the temperature between 65-80°F during the day and no lower than 60°F at night. Avoid placing it near drafty windows or doors as sudden temperature drops can stress the plant. Maintaining a stable temperature will help your Philodendron thrive and remain healthy indoors.

For outdoor planting, the Philodendron McDowell is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 10-11. These zones typically have milder winters with temperatures above 30°F.

If you live in a colder climate, you can still grow it outdoors during the warmer months and bring it inside before the temperatures drop. This plant thrives in temperatures above 50°F and doesn't tolerate frost well.

The Philodendron plants enjoy moderate to high humidity levels. Indoors, you can increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, using a humidifier, or placing a tray of water near the plant. Outdoors in humid regions, the plant will naturally benefit from the ambient moisture in the air.

Wildlife – Philodendron Mcdowell Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Philodendron McDowell is known to attract pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies with its unique flowers. These pollinators are drawn to the plant's nectar and can help facilitate the pollination process, leading to the production of seeds. By attracting these pollinators, the Philodendron McDowell contributes to the ecosystem's biodiversity and promotes plant reproduction.

Philodendron McDowell is mildly toxic to pets and humans, causing symptoms such as irritation and swelling if ingested. It is safe to touch and handle without any adverse effects. However, it is recommended to keep this plant out of reach of pets and children to prevent accidental ingestion.

How to Propagate Your Philodendron ‘Mcdowell

The Philodendron McDowell can be propagate through stem cuttings. To propagate your plant, you can take a cutting with at least one node (where leaves are attached) and place it in water or directly into a well-draining potting mix. Keep the cutting in a warm and humid environment, and roots should start to develop within a few weeks. Once the roots are established, you can transplant the cutting into a larger pot with soil and continue to care for it as you would a mature plant. This method of propagation is relatively straightforward and can help you expand your Philodendron collection.

Key Takeaways

  1. This Philodendron is a hybrid created by John Banta, a cross between Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum. It inherits the striking heart-shaped leaves and velvety texture from its parent plants.
  2. The Philodendron 'Mcdowell' is a crawler rather than a climber, unlike vining Philodendrons, which grow upward with support.
  3. The extremely large, heart-shaped leaves are velvety with prominent white veins, making it a popular choice among collectors. Young leaves often emerge with a pinkish hue before maturing into a deep green.
  4. As a crawler rather than a climber, Mcdowell grows horizontally across the soil, requiring a wide pot or ground space to thrive.
  5. This Philodendron plant is known for its air-purifying qualities, making it a popular choice for indoor spaces.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Philodendron ‘Mcdowell’ is a stunning hybrid known for its large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves with distinct white veins that give it a bold, tropical appearance. As a crawling variety, it grows horizontally, spreading across the soil, which makes it ideal for wide containers or as a ground cover in tropical gardens. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light and requires consistently moist but well-drained soil. It’s essential to let the top inch dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. High humidity (around 60-80%) and warm temperatures between 65-80°F are ideal for its growth, making it a great indoor plant, especially when a humidifier is available in drier environments. With proper care and attention, Philodendron ‘Mcdowell’ brings lush, green beauty to any space and rewards growers with its impressive, luxurious foliage. Magical TV Backlight With Amazingly Accurate and Vivid Colors
Size: 7.8FT for 40''-50'' TV, Size: 7.8FT for 40''-50'' TV
I had very high expectations for this Govee 3 Lite backlight and it surpassed all of them by a mile. This Govee 3 Lite with proper set up, calibration and correct settings looks absolutely magnificent with beautiful and accurate colors that it adds so much to my TV viewing experience. Most of the "bad" reviews on here is USER ERROR because the person can't bother to do even the most basic research therefore he/she doesn't know how to set it up, calibrate and adjust settings correctly. So here are some tips and settings that may help others: For accurate colors it's vital to set your white light accurately first since all other colors blend off of white. Also, ALL of your TV SETTINGS like BRIGHTNESS, COLOR TEMPERATURE, PICTURE MODE, COLOR, CONTRAST, etc. has an impact on the LED strip brightness, vividness, accuracy and density as well. So play around and pause a scene on your TV that's really colorful and then turn your individual TV settings all the way up and all the way down to see how it affects your Govee lights. Now I have an LG OLED and OLED's have perfect black levels and near perfect colors out of the box, so you may not get the exact results I did. But it doesn't hurt to give it a try and see if it helps your Govee set up if you are not satisfied with your colors. 1. Put the camera dead center of your TV and at 90 degrees (or as close as you can). 2. Install the light strip as close as you possibly can to the edge of your TV. I've seen youtube videos where people install them 2" to 3" inward from the edge (I get it if you have no choice because your back panel has a weird shape or is not completely flat along the edges) and that gives such a tiny light spread on the wall and also leads to dead spots in the corners because the light is set too far away and that causes the TV's corners to cast a shadow on the wall leaving a dead spot. 3. When you calibrate with the orange squares make sure the gray box ends up looking either like a rectangle or a bow tie. I added pictures of my actual calibrations of both shapes to my review to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. If your TV is wall mounted or on a TV stand where there's nothing underneath the camera that may interfere with it, I'd probably go with a rectangle shape which is the ideal shape according to Govee. But after playing around with the calibration I discovered that for my set up a bow tie shape gives me the most accurate and uniform colors because I have a semi-glossy TV stand and it helps to prevent the camera from seeing past the bottom edge of my TV and catching whatever colors that are reflecting back up off my TV stand so it doesn't interfere with the actual colors coming from my screen. 4. When you adjust the "color calibration, saturation, white balance, etc." in the app do it in a dark room. 4a. "Saturation" setting needs to be dropped way down to give you accurate colors. I keep mine between 1%-5%. If you're one of many people that's having problems with your white light looking green, dropping the saturation down a lot should fix that problem and give you a nice white light that will go a long way in giving you accurate colors across the board. 5. "White balance" default is 50% but it looks a little too blue on my LG OLED so I keep my white balance a little more on the red side at 70%-75% and I get a nice slightly warmer white that works wonders in getting accurate colors all around. Google "pure white" background and use that to adjust your white balance and saturation. 6. "Relative Brightness" default is 50%. I set mine all the way up to 100% on all four sides and then I control the brightness level with the main brightness slider which when it's a bright room I set it to 100% and when it's a dark room I set it to 47% because that's the percentage I found that when the screen or parts of the screen goes dark so do the corresponding lights which only adds to the immersive viewing experience. 7. If you want your lights to show all the different colors as you watch TV you need to choose "part" in the app. If you choose "whole" you will get only solid colors on all four sides. 8. You can choose either "movie" or "game" but personally I leave mine to "movie" 90% of the time even if I'm gaming. The difference between them is with "game" the colors switch a little faster but that leads to a lot more flickering which can be very distracting. With "movie" it's a softer and smoother transition. 9. I love that I can connect my Govee kit to my Alexa app by adding it in the "skills" section which allows me to control the backlight with voice commands for things like turning the LED strip on and off or the brightness up or down or setting a timer/routine to turn the LED strip on or off at a certain time of day I set. Thankfully I had a few weeks to do a lot of research and also check out youtube videos before Prime Day when I was able to purchase this kit for $46 for the 40"-50" size. And it was in doing this research that made my set up super easy with no problems at all when my kit arrived. All told it took me about two hours from start to finish to install and set up my backlight settings to get it perfect for my LG OLED TV. It took me longer than most people since I went all OCD when figuring out the exact placement, spacing, height and measurements of the lights to get the best possible light spread on my wall and it was all worth it since my LED's look fantastic because I have a full and wide light spread and the colors are so evenly dense with no dead spots in the corners like I've seen on so many other set ups. I was worried that the whole calibration thing would be a PITA since a lot of reviewers seem to struggle mightily with getting it right. For me, it was super simple because through my research I learned what not to do and avoided all the pitfalls that plague others. The proof is in the pudding. I've added screenshots of the settings I use and a sample video with those settings and my lights are mesmerizing and gorgeous. Check it out!

Probably the best available for the money
Size: 11.8FT for 55''-65'' TV, Size: 11.8FT for 55''-65'' TV
I love these lights. High-quality dynamic backlighting for your TV. With the calibration and settings dialed correctly, it moves and breathes smoothly with the picture as you use the screen. With this installed it really amps up the cozy and artsy vibes of the screen, adding further immersion. It's also easier on your eyes in a dark room to add backlighting. You can set the brightness level to the level you want, and you can fully control the colors and tone, whether you want to set it to something static, add a colored border, or use the dynamic lighting (which is what I'm currently using). These lights were made for 55 inch to 65 inch TVs. There are four strips rolled up, two for the short side and two for the long side. No matter which corner you start from, you will be able to set it up properly during calibration. The strips stuck well so far but were not so firm that I couldn't pull up one strip to reapply it. The TV I have here in the pictures is the Sony Bravia ii OLED 4K panel (~$2000 screen, excellent picture quality for the price point). I am using a Rocketfish omnidirectional wall mount behind it. TIPS I followed some other reviews here for the calibration. It was recommended to set the TV brightness to max for calibration, then adjust both TV and backlight brightness after setup. The physical setup only required me to have a TV pulled forward from the wall a foot or so, plus a 3-step ladder so I could easily reach the top of the TV. You could absolutely install this on a TV sitting a bit forward on a stand as well. App setup was a breeze once the lights and camera were attached properly. I will sort out my cable management eventually, once I have a TV shelf installed below my panel which is my next goal for this room. The kit comes with some additional adhesive to secure the lights that I didn't end up using, as the adhesive on the back of the light strips was sufficient for now. I'm saving the extra parts just in case. Overall I highly recommend it! The dynamic lighting adds so much immersion without being loud or flashy unless you want it to be. Kinda just blends into the background and subtly amps up the quality of your whole experience. Like the color on the picture just blends seamlessly into the wall and the room.

An effective TV watching enhancement
Size: 7.8FT for 40''-50'' TV
The Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite transformed my TV-watching experience. Installation was quick, the adhesive holds well, and the calibration process is a little tricky and will take time to get right, from mapping out the TV size to setting the light quality up within the app. But the light quality is good and works best in rooms which are very dark with no external light sources to influence the color the camera picks up. The ambient lighting makes movies and gaming feel more immersive without being distracting. The app controls are intuitive, and the customization options let you fine‑tune everything from brightness to color modes. If you want an easy, affordable way to elevate your TV experience, this backlight delivers as promised.

One of my favorite purchases ever.
Size: 11.8FT for 55''-65'' TV, Size: 11.8FT for 55''-65'' TV
So I bought this backlight a few months ago and it's been one of my favorite purchases I ever made on Amazon. Honestly, once you start using the backlight, it's so hard to go back. It makes TV and games just so much more immersive, especially when there are bright scenes and the lights flash, or when there are dark scenes and it just goes completely black. The setup is really easy but it does take some precision to get it right the first time and to keep it working for a long time. And sometimes the things that stick the wires to the back of the TV do like to fall off. Although that may be a consequence of how my TV is built. I think it looks best in a darker room where there's less space for the light to go away, especially when the TV is against a wall. But that's how I use it, and it's been just an amazing experience. The app functionality is also pretty good, although I don't use it as much these days and I just keep it in TV syncing mode. The lights can get really bright, so if you want to, you can use it as a separate ambient lighting for your room. Although personally, I think that's too much effort and I just use my lamp. Coming from someone who uses his TV a lot, if you're on the fence, just get it
