It prevents pinching of the lips and gives a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face to assist with turning aids. The eggbutt 'cheeks' also prevent the bit being pulled through the mouth, while retaining the advantages of a loose ring.
The loose rings keep the bit mobile in the horse's mouth, encouraging gentle mouthing and discouraging 'fixing' against the contact. They also allow for immediate relief from tongue and bar pressure when rein aids are relaxed, thus rewarding the horse quickly for a correct response.
The Blue Sweet Iron Bombers Control Plate 45 mouthpiece from Bombers Bits has a central control plate set at a 45 degree angle to follow the contours of the horse's tongue. Consequently, a horse who uses his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control, will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control. The Petros mouthpiece rotates, preventing the horse from taking hold of the bit. This can be useful for horses that tend to lean or grab the bit.
The blue sweet iron mouthpiece oxidises easily, creating a warm, sweet taste in the horse's mouth. This encourages mouthing, salivation and acceptance of the bit.
