High-Quality Sawdust Spawn

Are you looking for an easy way to get into mushroom cultivation? Sawdust spawn is a great choice for those looking to grow gourmet mushrooms as it is relatively easy to work with and produces good results. You can use sawdust spawn to inoculate a variety of substrates including logs, wood chips, straw, and even coffee grounds. The best way to inoculate a substrate with sawdust spawn is to mix the sawdust spawn with the substrate in a clean environment. When inoculating logs, it is best to drill holes into the logs and then fill the holes with the sawdust spawn. Once the substrate is fully colonized, it can be used to grow mushrooms.

FAQ

Can I use sawdust spawn to grow my own mushrooms?

Of course! Sawdust spawn is a great way to get started with mushroom cultivation. It is relatively easy to work with and produces good results.

What is mushroom spawn?

Mushroom spawn is simply live mushroom mycelium (the vegetative part of a fungus) grown on a sterile substrate. The most common substrates used for mushroom spawn are grains, sawdust, and wood chips. Spawn is used to inoculate (or “seed”) larger substrates or fruiting blocks which will then be used to grow mushrooms.

What is Sawdust Spawn?

Hardwood sawdust is a common substrate for mushroom cultivation as it is readily available and relatively cheap. Sawdust spawn is made by inoculating sawdust with live mycelium which will then colonize the substrate. Once fully colonized, the sawdust spawn can be used to inoculate other substrates or fruiting blocks.

What type of Hardwood Sawdust is used for sawdust spawn?

Any type of hardwood sawdust can be used to make sawdust spawn. Softwood sawdust is not suitable for most commonly grown species of gourmet mushrooms. At Fungi Farm, we use hardwood sawdust supplemented with soybean hulls. More specifically, we use hardwood sawdust pellets. Hardwood pellets are used by many farms to grow most gourmet mushrooms

What is the difference between grain spawn and sawdust spawn?

The main difference between grain spawn and sawdust spawn is the substrate that they are made with. Grain spawn is made by inoculating grains (usually rye or wheat) with live mycelium while sawdust spawn is made by inoculating sawdust with live mycelium.

Both grain spawn and sawdust spawn can be used to inoculate larger substrates or fruiting blocks. However, sawdust spawn is generally considered to be better for inoculating larger substrates while grain spawn is better for inoculating smaller substrates or fruiting blocks.

What is the difference between sawdust spawn and plug spawn?

The main difference between sawdust spawn and plug spawn is the substrate that they are made with. Sawdust spawn is made by inoculating sawdust with live mycelium while plug spawn is made by inoculating dowels or plugs with live mycelium.

Both sawdust spawn and plug spawn can be used to inoculate logs or stumps. However, sawdust spawn is generally considered to be better for inoculating larger substrates while plug spawn is better for inoculating smaller substrates due to cost.

What substrates can be used with sawdust spawn?

Sawdust spawn can be used to inoculate a variety of substrates including logs, wood chips, straw, and even coffee grounds.

How do I inoculate a substrate with sawdust spawn?

The best way to inoculate a substrate with sawdust spawn is to mix the sawdust spawn with the substrate in a clean environment. When inoculating logs, it is best to drill holes into the logs and then fill the holes with the sawdust spawn. Once the substrate is fully colonized, it can be used to grow mushrooms.

Can I use sawdust spawn to grow mushrooms outdoors?

Yes, sawdust spawn can be used for growing mushrooms outdoors. Outdoor mushroom beds and logs are just a couple of ways to do this. There are many ways to use mycelium grown on a sawdust substrate.

What are the benefits of using sawdust spawn over other types of spawn?

Sawdust spawn has a number of benefits including its ease of use, low cost, and good results.

Which varieties should I start with?

Oyster mushrooms are always best for beginners, but you can also grow lion's mane mushrooms, king oyster, shiitake mushrooms, and many more gourmet mushrooms.

How long will the spawn last?

Spawn can last for several months if stored properly.

How should I store the spawn?

The spawn should be stored in a cool, dark place.

How much spawn do I need?

The amount of spawn needed will depend on the substrate that you are using and the size of the area you are inoculating.

How do I know if the spawn is still good?

The easiest way to tell if the spawn is still good is to look for signs of mold or other contaminants. If you see any mold, it is best to discard the spawn and start over.

How long does it take for the sawdust spawn to colonize a substrate?

The amount of time it takes for sawdust spawn to colonize a substrate will depend on the type of substrate and the conditions in which it is being grown. Generally, it takes between two and six weeks for sawdust spawn to fully colonize a substrate.

Good luck!

Great toy!
Color: Grass Green, Size: Medium
We have a boxer and pit mix and he destroys everything. This toy however lasted the longest. He played with this every day and he plays very rough. But after 3 months I finally threw it out. It was still in tact but it was about to start falling apart. I will definitely buy another one.

Great for aggressive chewers!
Color: Mixed, Size: Medium
My dachshund pit mix is VERY hard on toys. She is a very aggressive chewer. She loves this toy and so far hasn't destroyed it! I was concerned because the center is softer, but because of the shape she is unable to get a good grip on it to chew it to pieces. Very happy with it so far!

Smaller than pictured
Color: Mixed, Size: Medium, Color: Mixed, Size: Medium
It’s a lot smaller than pictured and I have the same dog type as was depicted in the one of the pictures. The dog like it so I guess that’s good. I will not be playing tug of war with him using this. I like my fingers thank you very much. I would say it durable. He destroys most toys in minutes. He did destroy the squeaky part in about 10 minutes so bonus points for that.
