Various Artists - Like Someone I Know: A Celebration of Margo Guryan (Various Artists)Most of our stories about cult musicians who make an album or two and then seem to vanish are framed by grief, despair, and frayed ambition. Most of our stories about cult musicians who make an album or two and then seem to vanish are framed by grief, despair, and frayed ambition. Not so with Margo Guryan, an ardent jazz anomaly who disdained pop music until hearing "God Only Knows" in 1966, opening a window onto the wonders that form could contain. Only two years later, she released her own set of little pop symphonies, Take a Picture, to great praise and expectation. But, having already divorced the hard-gigging valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, she declined to tour or even talk about it all that much, content even if her reticence meant Take a Picture was soon consigned to discount racks and cutout bins. She wrote and recorded for years to come, even collaborating with Neil Diamond's band, but mostly she seemed satisfied by her relatively private life. As befits music so stunning and subtle, Guryan, who died in 2021, has enjoyed several renaissances during the last six decades. And now, it's happening again: Soon after her near-whispered and lovelorn hymn "Why Do I Cry" made her a TikTok star in 2021, the same year she passed, Numero Group launched a reissue campaign, resulting in the acclaimed 2024 set, Words and Music. And now, a dozen artists-none of whom were born when Take a Picture was made, most of whom weren't even born for a crucial early reissue by Franklin Castle-have reinterpreted and reimagined that entire album (plus one bonus track) for Like Someone I Know: A Celebration of Margo Guryan. Empress Of, Margo Price, Clairo, June McDoom: They all affirm Guryan's sharpness as a songwriter and the brilliance of an album that has far outstripped whatever promotional cycle Guryan rejected so long ago. Guryan was born to a sprawling family in Far Rockaway, when the place was still mostly framed by trees. While a composition student at Boston University, Guryan stumbled into a gig playing piano between Miles Davis Quintet sets, signed a songwriting deal with Atlantic Records, and botched a session with Nesuhi Ertegun. But she wasn't looking to be a singing star. In 1959, she headed to the Lenox School of Jazz in the Berkshires to write for Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, earn the attention of instructor Max Roach, and find a longtime mentor and friend in Gunther Schuller. She became an accomplished lyricist, writing not only for Coleman and Nancy Harrow but also for Harry Belafonte and Gary MacFarland. But it was that subsequent encounter with the Beach Boys that opened the trap door for Guryan to Take a Picture and scores of other super songs, many of which appear on Words and Music. Take a Picture is a sophisticated survey of mid-20s romance and indecision, from the flirty romp of "Sunday Morning" and falling-for-you affirmation "Can You Tell" to the desperate helplessness of "What Can I Give You." Her perpetually soft voice, audacious songcraft, and complete candor: Guryan, in 1968 and beyond, was making daring music, no matter how gently those sounds seemed to move. With a portion of proceeds being donated to providing and advocating for affordable reproductive health services, Like Someone I Know reinforces the strength of Guryan's songs by allowing a dozen different artists to take them for trips of their own. The core always remains, unwavering. McDoom stretches static and harmony beneath "Thoughts," as if they're spinning on a dub plate beneath her arcing vocals. Rahill let's "Sun" unfurl over harmonium drone and entrancing percussive ticks, digging into Guryan's interest in the surreal. Frankie Cosmos and Good Morning take a country shuffle through "Take a Picture," entwined vocals falling over the rhythmic skips with perfect romantic relish. Over the last few decades, it has become increasingly clear just how good Guryan was, how sturdy her songs have been amid varying tides of taste. Like Someone I Know offers absolute validation, a testament to the enduring relevance and brilliance of Guryan's work.

Lightweight, Stylish, Moisture-Wicking, Breathable & Stretchy
Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Large, Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Large
I picked up this Alex Vando polo in bluedotwhite to add to my polo collection, and overall I’m pleased. The fit is true to size, and the material is lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and stretchy which is perfect for casual office wear or everyday use. I like the subtle design details on the pocket and collar, which add contrast and visual interest without being over the top. The shirt feels substantial without being see-through, and the construction is solid with clean stitching and no loose threads or buttons. At the current online price, this shirt is a good value. My only disappointment is that I got a noticeable snag on the right chest after the second wearing; I’m not sure if there’s a way to smooth the threads back out. Despite that, I still recommend it for style, comfort, and performance.

soft breathable shirt
Color: Navycircles, Size: Large, Color: Navycircles, Size: Large
I measure a 33w and 42c. That would indicate that I should be closer to a size medium. But I have received enough summer short sleeve shirts that have a sizing chart that says that I should be a size medium only to find that they would only look good on me if I were built like Adonis. So I ordered a size large. It fits pretty well. I still think it is a little more snug than I would want but that is just my vanity wishing I had a flat gut. It is a bit difficult to read the washing instructions that are printed in silver on the inner collar. The label says it is 87% nylon and 13% spandex. The craftsmanship of the shirt is excellent. The collar has a nice cloth roll covering the seam so there is no chafing on the neck. The inner seams on the sides are double shitched with an interesting taper at the bottom that would only be noticeable if the shirt is not tucked in. The length of the shirt is sufficient that it will not try to pull out on the back and it is stretchy enough that I think if I tuck it in my underwear it will not pull out when riding my bike. I like the pattern. It is like the little dots on a bird feather repeated over and over.

I wonderfully versatile athletically fitting summer polo
Color: Lightbluedot, Size: Small
Don't really have any down sides on this polo. It's lightweight yet surprisingly wind resistant, even on cooler days im not losing all my body heat at the slightest breeze. It feels more like a cotton blend while performing like a polyester with the stretch and drying performance. The fit is very athletic, with just enough room in the chest and shoulders while hugging close to the midsection. This polo is quality both in looks, with the collar holding shape and appearance, the faux chest pocket ups the look of the shirt without being a clunky piece with a pocket that bunches up. Im thrilled with this polo and am buying more colors to have variety with this shirt. Wonderful wonderful value for the money if you're looking for a versatile close fitting shirt without hindering mobility

Great shirt with a couple of very insignificant flaws
Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Small, Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Small
Stylish, breathable, great fit, vibrant color, nice attention to detail with the colorway. Check out my photos for a look at the way the pocket colors and fabrics match that of the collar button, and the tiny perforations in the main fabric that allow you to stay cool in this shirt. There are a couple of spots where you can see flaws, but they're not significant enough to me to deduct a star. The flaws are the thread sticking out of the button, and how the collar has a bit of an indentation in it and isn't totally level smooth. It's hard to figure out how to iron the collar without creasing it in a bad location, so this is the way it looks after ironing with my best effort. All in all, as I've found with the Alex Vando brand, I enjoy their polo/golf shirts a lot - the fit, look, pretty much everything.

Comfortable summer wear. Runs a little big and long
Color: Blueoval, Size: Small, Color: Blueoval, Size: Small
This is a very comfortable polo. I can tell from the features that the shirt is pretty much designed for golf. - Very light weight like tees for runners. It is see through if not for the printed pattern. - Definitely breathable, perfect for dry weather region. Will keep you dry throughout the round and does not cling onto the body to inhibit motion. Structure stays crisp throughout the round. - Stretchable, does not restrict motion during golf, sweat or not. - Longer length to stay tuck in. Note: - It runs big overall. The model shown is 6’1” and he is wearing a Medium. Seeing that, I bought a Small even though I normally wear medium. It fits my upper body perfectly with a little room to spare. - It also runs a little long. It will definitely stay tucked in throughout the round. However, it is too long for me to wear it untucked. I am 5’ 8”. Overall I like the shirt’s quality and a reasonable price for a golf shirt. It would have been perfect had it not been a little long for untuck wear.
