In this book, by way of an appreciation of our shared heritage, Christine De Luca offers a montage of photographs of a wide range of abandoned crofthouses in Shetland, selected from Unst to Fair Isle and from Foula to Skerries.  Though the crofthouses are mouldering, this material culture can still be seen all over the landscape.  Each of the 38 locations depicted is accompanied by a short poem in Shaetlan (with an English version) which attempts to evoke something of the individuality of the place and of the people who lived there.  You can find all the crofts using the OS grid references and also enjoy reading about the derivations of the fascinating place-names.

Christine De Luca (née Pearson) writes in Shaetlan and English.  Born in Bressay in 1947, she spent her formative years in Waas.  She lives in Edinburgh and was appointed Edinburgh's Makar (laureate) for 2014-2017.  She has had eight poetry collections published, several of which have won awards.  Her most recent is Veeve (Mariscat Press, Edinburgh, 2021).  She has also written two novels and various storybooks for children.  She is a member of Shetland ForWirds and a keen advocate of the Shaetlan tongue.

Inspiring!
Format: Kindle
Rosaria’s hospitality is a hard act to follow, but her advice and examples give the inspiration to make a difference. May people find the Lord - know Him, know Him better - while sitting at my table.

Am almost done reading
Format: Hardcover
This book came recommended by a very hospitable friend. I'm almost done reading and wanted to drop by here to leave a positive review. Lots of good useful ideas in this book and it has an engaging writing style. I think the author is specifically gifted in the area of hospitality - not everyone can live like she and her family do, but there are a lot of practical tips if you're hoping to grow in that area of your life.

Hospitality is the Most Important Thing
Format: Hardcover
The author does an excellent job making a case for how important and underrated hospitality is to a hurting world. She captures my attention instantly with her story about her neighbor Hank. She leaves me hanging through a couple of chapters before I get more details about his story. I almost put down the book permanently when she gets on her high religious horse. I suspect she and I would disagree about some of our theology. And I didn't need to be persuaded, so those chapters weren't written for me. If you skim (or skip) that beginning section, it's well worth the practical ideas for how to open up your own home and life in hospitality. A great challenge that I shall take up. May all our neighbors become friends and our friends become family.
