Tussah silk is made from wild silk moths in the forests of India and other South Asian countries, rather than the cultivated moths used for mulberry silk.  These wild moths feed on plants like oak and juniper leaves, which gives the silk a characteristic pale gold color, due to the tannins in their diet. 

This silk is more textured than the cultivated mulberry silk, and the yarn which it is spun into has a bit more "loft" to it, giving it exceptional breathability in warm weather, as well as insulation in cooler weather. 

Because the moths are allowed to emerge from the cocoon before it is harvested, it is often referred to as "peace silk".

We recommend hand-washing with Kookaburra Wool Wash. 

  or LANACare Lanolin Soap with 7.5% lanolin. The higher lanolin content is recommended for nursing pads & diaper covers, or to add even more softness to your woolens and to prolong the self-cleansing properties of the wool.
