State-owned Enterprises in Latin America and the World

Reorienting Development analyses what the nature, advantages, limitations and challenges of public companies are. It also offers new theoretical and conceptual insights on the nature and roles of the state and the controversial meanings of development.

The growing evidence of the failure of privatisation as prescribed by the Washington Consensus has prompted a reconsideration of state ownership and management in Latin America. In parallel, in other regions of the world, the economic and financial crisis has spurred a resurgence of analytical perspectives that challenge the hegemony of the free market paradigm. At both the academic and political levels, very intense debates have re-emerged on the significance of state-owned enterprises in national and regional development strategies.

This book is based on contributions from several researchers and policy makers that belong to the International Research Network on Public Enterprises and Development, following an international conference held in Montevideo in November 2012, jointly organised by Uruguay’s National Directorate for Industrial Development (MIEM-DNI) and the state-owned telecommunications company (ANTEL) in association with the Amsterdam-based Transnational Institute (TNI). The chapters of this book analyse the nature, advantages, limitations and challenges of public companies, framing the discussion vis-à-vis ongoing political processes and contributing new theoretical and conceptual insights on the nature and roles of the state and the controversial meanings of development.

It is worth purchasing a Protection Plan on an unfamiliar item
Bought a 3-year protection plan for a nut milk maker machine for $5.99. It was a fairly new kitchen item in our household and we were not familiar with the brand. So, I bought the plan for a piece (peace) of mind. The machine worked nicely for about 18-20 months with daily use until it tripped the circuit outlet. My initial chat with Asurion did not go as I expected due to discrepancy on their end as they see a protection plan for the nut milk maker as a sporting goods valued between $100-$199, not as a kitchen item valued between $30-$39.99. ( I had bought 3 different protection plan on th same day for multiple items purchased on Prime Days). They were looking at a different plan and I was unable to get them to "scroll over" to the appropriate protection plan. I tried again on a different day during the first hour of their contact hours and had a cheerful Asurion agent who was able to find the appropriate kitchen item protection plan. It was a simple and thorough conversation and transaction. I was refunded within hours after I packed up and dropped off the damaged item out to UPS. Moral of the story: Asurion Protection Plan is worth it and contact them at the start of their first day shift, not at the end of their evening shift.

No hassle refund
So glad I bought the plan. After 2.5 years of everyday use of my toaster, it quit working. Contacted Asurion, they emailed a shipping label. A few hours after I dropped the package off at UPS, I had the refund in my Amazon account. Very easy, no hassles.
