Transparent Cloudy Clear. Skullcrusher is, by all accounts, an exploration of the ways you become yourself when you aren't looking - and how that feels once you start paying attention. It's a quiet power; a hushed celebration of the tiny, understated subtleties that culminate into knowing yourself. On her debut EP, songwriter Helen Ballentine offers an airy, intense, and unflinchingly open collection of songs written about - and from - one of life's in-between gray areas, a stretch of uncertainty and unemployment, and the subsequent search for identity. Here, as Skullcrusher, Ballentine grapples with how to communicate her private self to an audience. Ballentine has been playing music for most of her life - piano from age five, guitar since high school - but her songwriting didn't emerge until later. After moving from her home in upstate New York to Los Angeles to study studio art in college, Ballentine was working full-time at a Los Angeles gallery, poised to continue onto the trajectory of visual art she had been on since she was a teenager. Instead, it didn't feel right, and she quit. Suddenly faced with a peculiar freedom, Ballentine decided, somehow both confidently and tentatively, to seriously pursue music for the first time. While nannying on the side to make ends meet, she wrote "Places/Plans," her first song for Skullcrusher, a little over a year ago. Despite her extensive background in visual arts, Ballentine suddenly found songwriting to be the best avenue for her artistic visions, an easy way for her to organically discover what it as she was trying to say. "I was feeling very strongly about my lack of a career path, both insecure and confident at the same time," Ballentine explains. "But there was also a lot of confidence that arose out of that process because I was really able to spend time with myself, and the things I love." In music, as in her visual art practices, Ballentine is drawn to conflicting pieces of a puzzle; how hard and soft meet, and the intersection of certainty and ambiguity. Ballentine would tinker on music in pieces, feeling like she wasn't accomplishing anything day after day, and then suddenly realize she had been assembling songs. That experience felt formative, and the resulting EP, which she worked on alongside producer Noah Weinman, is about what it means to feel like you're not doing anything, but finding immense meaning and depth within that, too. The four dark, dreamy songs on her debut EP were influenced by a strange-but-fitting amalgamation of media consumed in the immediate aftermath of quitting her 9-5. There's Valerie and her Week of Wonders, the Czech new-wave film that went on to inform Skullcrusher's aesthetic. There's Ballentine's love of fantasy and surrealism, her appreciation of the way fantasy novels juxtapose beauty and violence. Ballentine was also fully immersed in the world of Nick Drake, watching and reading anything she could about his songwriting. Another sonic anchor came from ambient electronica, which provided her with a shared vocabulary with her new band. And as Skullcrusher, Ballentine is decisive and immediate with the way she uses a sparse arrangement, fitting minimal sounds together in a way that creates a fuller space. On the opening "Places/Plans," Ballentine sighs, "Come in, the window's open and I'm lying alone," which feels fitting for the entirety of the EP - Ballentine invites the listener into the depths her personal, intense solitude. "I put so much emphasis on this private self, and all of these things that I love that are my own, and as soon as I let someone else into that, it's really hard," Ballentine says. "But I'm also someone who wants to let someone else into that. It's sort of this back-and-forth about wanting to connect to other people but also being a little bit afraid of that." Skullcrusher's understated energy radiates with the atmosphere of waking up to the quiet terror of shapeless, structureless days, but it finds power in eschewing the pressures of careerism and a vapid culture of productivity. Instead, as Skullcrusher, Ballentine has the audacity to be comfortable enough with herself, and to simply accept the unknown as her life.

Relaxed Fit Linen Blend Button Down Shirt
Size: Large, Color: Light Beige, Size: Large, Color: Light Beige
I like this shirt and it actually looks better than it does in the attached photo. The shirt is 55% linen and I took the photo without ironing because I wanted to show that this shirt is better than many linen shirts when it comes to wrinkles. In fact, I can steam the wrinkles out and don’t need to drag out the iron. The shirt is cool and comfortable. I like that you can use the draw string waist to make it more fitted. The button holes are a little small, which makes it harder for those of us who have arthritis to use. I will just leave most of the buttons fastened and slip the shirt over my head. It seems very well made. I looked it over carefully and did not find any loose threads or missed stitches. I think this is a good value.

Cute summer top
Size: Large, Color: Light Beige, Size: Large, Color: Light Beige
Cute and comfortable linen blend shirt that’s perfect for summer. The fit is relaxed without looking oversized or sloppy, which I really like. I usually wear between a large and extra large depending on the chest area, and I ordered the large based on the size chart. It fit correctly according to the measurements, but I personally think the extra large may have been a little more comfortable for me through the bust. For reference, I’m around a 33-inch waist and a 42C bust. The light beige color is really pretty and easy to style with denim jeans, jean skirts, or sandals for a casual summer look. Since it’s a lighter-colored cotton-linen blend, you’ll want to wear the proper undergarments underneath depending on your skin tone, which is pretty normal for linen-style fabrics. I also love the adjustable cinched waist because it gives the shirt a more flattering shape without making it tight. Overall, it’s a beautiful lightweight top with a nice relaxed fit, and I definitely recommend it.

Linen/Cotton Blend; Machine Wash Cold, Lay Flat or Hang to Dry; Real Buttons
Size: Medium, Color: Light Beige, Size: Medium, Color: Light Beige
Amazon Essentials Women's Relaxed Fit Linen Blend Wide Sleeve Shirt with Adjustable Tie Waist Review: I got this for my daughter mostly (we trade clothes back and forth), and she finds it very comfortable and flattering. For reference, her measurements are about: 39 inches around the bust 35 inches around the hips/stomach  And 42 inches around the bottom   I ordered her a Medium, and it fits her very well, but it's on the edge of being big. If she lost a little weight, it might seem big but fit me a little better, but it fits her very well now. It's a very breathable fabric, and the cut is flattering. It is a little see through, not majorly, but she says she will probably wear it with a white or nude tank top as an underlayer, possibly with a bra too, but at that point it might be too hot for a summer outfit. It could be dressed up or down and would pair well with a skirt or jeans, with sandals or heels or cute sneakers. It could also be worn fully unbuttoned over a tank top, if one wanted. The buttons are real, and seem well-sewn. The collar is initially reluctant to stay open, but it will relax in time or one of us could iron it like that, but we're unlikely to, lol.   The only complaint she had was that when she goes to raise up her arms and hold them horizontally out in front of herself, the sleeves and shoulders become too tight across the back and up the arms, although this is a very common problem, unfortunately, with women's/girl's clothing. We'll have to live with it, but it will keep the shirt from being worn as often as it might have been. We're definitely happy for the natural fibers (a linen/cotton blend). We are both excited to wear and style it. I'll include photos.

Stylish & Comfortable Linen Blend Shirt with Great Fit and Durable Feel
Size: Small, Color: Light Beige
This Amazon Essentials linen blend shirt is a really nice addition to my wardrobe. The relaxed fit sits comfortably without feeling too loose or shapeless, and it drapes well on the body. The wide sleeves and adjustable waist add a stylish touch, making it look both casual and slightly dressed-up at the same time. The fabric feels good—light, breathable, and perfect for everyday wear. It has that easy, airy feel that works really well for warm weather while still looking put together. After the first wash, I was happy to see that the quality stayed the same. No noticeable shrinking, fading, or change in texture, which gives confidence that it will hold up well over time. Overall, it’s a simple but very flattering shirt that combines comfort, style, and good durability. Great for everyday outfits or casual outings where you still want to look a bit polished.

Sizing Varies, But an Amazing Tee if you get the right size!
Size: Large, Color: Navy
I ordered this in a size Large, my recommended size per Amazon and the size chart, it was so small through the underbust area that I could not wear it. I then ordered an XL and it is huge! The XL is too big everywhere, but especially through the bust! For your reference the bust line in the XL measures 42" pit to pit. I am going to try again to order a Large and see if perhaps I just got one that was sized incorrectly. This tee is so cute. I love the fit, the neckline, the slight flare at the hem. It's super cute and offers a great feminine look and feel. The material is amazing. Super soft, perfect non-clingy drape, opaque, lightweight . . . there's nothing not to love here!
