The Hitchcock Edition is dedicated to Mrs. Thomas Hitchcock (Louise Eustis Hitchcock), Master of the Aiken Hunt, Aiken, South Carolina. Louise and her husband, a Hall of Fame horse trainer and owner known as the father of American steeplechase horse racing, operated a steeplechase training track on their Aiken property and trained young thoroughbred horses imported from England. Aiken was also a winter playground for many of the country's wealthiest families including the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys. Somerville commemorated her time in Aiken with an article appearing in Vogue, "Aiken Impressions of an Irish Visitor", published two-months after this set was inscribed.
A very good set. Black leather spine labels a little rubbed and chipped, spine tips a bit rubbed, some corners bent inward, two volumes a little pock-marked, some bumping to boards.
