During World War II, the PT 19 Cornell Airplane Model was highly sought after due to its design meeting the Air Corps' request for a new primary trainer. With over 7,800 units produced between 1940 and 1944, this trainer was seen as a necessary tool for pilots transitioning from primary to advanced flight instruction. The demand for the PT 19 was so high that Fairchild had to enlist other companies, such as Aeronca and Howard

To further improve training, the PT-19A was released with a more powerful engine, and over 3,500 were ordered. Additionally, 917 PT-19Bs were built with instruments specifically for blind flying training.
