Discover the brilliance of James Norcliffe’s latest poetry collection, 'Deadpan.' This brand new paperback features 100 pages of evocative poetry that challenges the reader to embrace life’s complexities with a blend of humor and depth. Measuring at 165 x 235 x 10 mm, this collection is perfect for poetry lovers seeking pieces that convey big emotions without overt sentimentality. Norcliffe's deft craftsmanship shines through as he navigates themes of loss, identity, and the transience of life. The first section, 'Poor Yorick,' invites you into the reflective psyche of a narrator wrestling with the nuances of aging, while subsequent sections like 'Scan,' 'Trumpet Vine,' 'Telegraph Road,' and 'Travellers in a small Ford,' delve into the fleeting nature of childhood and existence. Each poem is characterized by its precision, dry wit, and a touch of surrealism, making them a treasure for readers who appreciate technical mastery in poetry. With Norcliffe's sharp and compassionate voice at the helm, 'Deadpan' is not just a book; it’s a philosophical exploration wrapped in lyrical beauty. The title of James Norcliffe’s tenth poetry collection points deftly to the way it conveys big emotions without cracking a smile or shedding a tear. In Deadpan, Norcliffe writes in an alert, compassionate yet sceptical voice. The book’s first section, â€Poor Yorick’, shares the thoughts of an introspective narrator as he contends with the travails of later life. â€In his hospital pyjamas’, Yorick is by turns cheerful and beset by loss, laughing and weeping, comparing the stages of life (and death). The following sections – â€Scan’, â€Trumpet Vine’, â€Telegraph Road’ and â€Travellers in a small Ford’ – reach around to mine experience in a world where â€nothing lasts’; not childhood, place nor identity. An appropriate response to this ephemeral world is to embrace ambiguity, uncertainty, absurdity and surrealism. â€Deadpan,’ writes the author in his introductory essay, â€is the porter in Macbeth pausing to take a piss while there is that urgent banging at the gate. It is Buster Keaton standing unmoved as the building crashes down on top of him. It is my poker-faced Yorkshire grandfather playing two little dicky birds sitting on the wall.’ These poems are concise and contained, using supple, precise language and a gleam of dry and mordant wit. Deadpan is the work of a mature and technically astute poet who is one of New Zealand’s leading writers.

Well Made, Runs A Little Small
I bought this on short notice for a drag show. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways. The interior feels like the inside of a standard suit coat, and is comfortable for long term wear. The sequins are sewn on in a pattern, and there's little, if any, fallout. I've only found a couple sequins on the floor.
I've used it a lot since the drag show, for a lot of things (live streams, videos, etc). Absolutely worth the price, and I've already gotten my money's worth out of it.
It does run a little small, but it still mostly fits according to the size chart.
A few notes:
- It doesn't have button holes, so if you're looking for something that buttons up, look elsewhere.
- Washing instructions say to machine wash cool, warm iron (do not tumble dry, do not dry clean). I'd say run it on the gentlest cycle you can muster, or just spot clean stains and the pits (if you're sweaty). I don't know how well this thing would survive a wash, but I haven't needed to wash it yet.

Showstopper
We got so many compliments on our outfits. I wore this for our Daddy/Daughter dance and plan to take it on a cruise later this year. The jacket is great quality and a little on the heavy side with all the sequins. It fit perfect in the shoulders and chest. It was a little long on the sleeves for my taste but I just tucked them under and managed for the night. For reference I’m 5’10” tall and 175lbs with athletic build. I bought a large.

Missing Sequins and Threadbare!
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Purple, Size: 3X-Large, Color: Purple
Jacket is great for fit, and is overall okay, but there are large patches where no sequins are attached! For the $59.99 price I paid, I am definitely feeling very disappointed in the quality of the jacket. Of course, I didn’t realize this till after the return window closed! If you order, do yourself the favor and check to make sure the jacket is in good quality!
