About Ammonites (what they are)
Ammonites were marine molluscs that lived in the ocean millions of years ago (they’re related to modern-day squid, octopus and cuttlefish). They had coiled shells with internal chambers, which helped them with buoyancy in the water—kind of like a natural “float” system.
They went extinct around the same time as the dinosaurs, and their shells fossilised over time into the beautiful spirals we collect today. Because they were so widespread and evolved into many different forms, they’re considered one of the most iconic fossils on Earth.
