This is not part of the natural crystal — it’s a specially applied support material used to stabilize the geode and protect it from cracking during transport and display. The amethyst crystals form inside a hollow volcanic cavity (often with an agate or quartz shell), and once extracted, the rough outer rock is reinforced with this backing to ensure the piece remains sturdy for many years to come.
