Kids & Teens Sewing and Upcycling Camp Sewing Foundations (Ages 12–16)
The kids / teens will start with an overview of how to sew (for anyone who doesn't have sewing experience yet), including learning the parts of the sewing machine, cutting fabric, sewing a straight line, and pivoting at corners.
Then they'll dive into talking about creative ways they can modify clothes they already have to make them into something totally new. The teens will learn to upcycle a few garments in various ways, depending on what they bring in, from adding panels / flares to jeans to appliquéing a fabric design to a sweatshirt.
Please bring a handful of garments you want to transform to the first class (3-5 items to get started)--things like a t-shirt, sweatshirt, jeans, and / or a jean jacket are great choices. They can also bring in things from the thrift store that they might want to do slight alterations / modifications.
Skills They’ll Learn
- Understand and use a sewing machine
- Sew straight lines, curves, and corners
- Pin, cut, and assemble fabric pieces
- Understand and sew to a specific seam allowance
- Creative ways to transform a garment into something different
- Alterations concepts and skills (taking something in, up, out, and hemming)
- Confidence and creativity through hands-on projects
Who It’s For
Kids ages 12-16 with an open mind who are ready to explore sewing and creative upcycling projects. No prior experience required.
