The story of the Tower of Babel and the resulting confusion of languages is one of the Old Testament’s most iconic episodes, despite occupying only a handful of verses. Bruegel’s depiction, however, was inspired not by the actual ziggurat of Ur—the ancient Babylonian “gate of the gods” rediscovered in 1913—but by Rome’s Colosseum, whose tiered structure influenced his vision of the tower. Bruegel further relocates the biblical events from the Middle East to the North Sea coast, portraying King Nimrod, dressed as a 16th-century European prince, overseeing construction in a polder landscape reminiscent of the Netherlands, Belgium, or Northern Germany. Most remarkable is the painting’s extraordinary detail, which continually reveals new layers and facets upon closer examination.
