RÉSUMÉ: Michel est arrêté à New York par la police qui a trouvé sur lui quelques grammes de cocaïne. Sa compagne, Cécile Carline, décide de rester sur place afin de l’aider. Mais, ne pouvant renouveler son visa, elle envisage alors un mariage blanc pour pouvoir rester aux États-Unis. Pour ce faire, elle passe par Novak qui lui présente plusieurs profils. Au hasard, elle tire celui d'un certain Zacharie S. Freestamp, qui devient bientôt son époux de papier… et qui se prendra un peu trop au jeu. Mais cet homme au passé trouble s’avère être un dangereux psychopathe et Cécile ne tardera pas à tomber dans un terrible engrenage.
