James Wilson was a past president of the Bookplate Society. He formed a considerable collection, and ranks as one of the leading British collectors of the second half of the 20th century.
Simon Brett kindly identified this bookplate, replying to our query as to whether he had done a design for Wilson, "Yes I did: in 1978 and it shows an open book with a title page of a Blakean figure entering a doorway, and to the left a daylight landscape with a castle and a lock, referring to his address, and on the right a night-time landscape. It appears in Brian North Lee's Fleece Press book about my bookplates."
