A dense and warm hat, worked in fingering weight wool with a slip stitch pattern in 2 colours that shows off slight variations in colour in hand dyed yarn. The hat can either be worn in a slouchy style with ample fit or as a beret styled hat when pushed down at the nape (directions are also given for a shorter beanie style hat, if you’d like a snugger fit).

The ribbing of the brim is taller near the face but much narrower at the back of the neck (to keep the ribbing from folding in the nape). The pattern is worked with a bigger needle size than the brim, since the slip stitch pattern pulls in a lot. This pattern works best with wool or with any other grippy yarn.  The pattern has charted and written instructions.

DESIGNER RECOMMENDED YARN: Rustique Fine by Polo & Co. (100% French Wool; 100g/437yds): 1 Skein Color A, 1 Skein Color B.  Shown in Silex & Oriental Nights.

ALTERNATE YARN: Sock by Malabrigo  (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 25g/110 yds):  2 Mini Skeins Color A & 2 Mini Skeins Color B.  Sock is a light fingering or sock weight yarn that is kettle-dyed in small batches in Uruguay to create beautiful variegated yarn.  Variations can be subtle or very distinct depending on the colorway.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced - slip stitches used throughout

NEEDLES: Size US / mm circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

GAUGE: 39 sts x 36 rows = 4” in basket weave stitch on US 8 / 5mm needles, after blocking. 
30 sts x 46 rows = 4” in slip stitch ribbing on US 1.5 / 2.5mm needles, after blocking.
