- Beautiful Yoruba Divination Bowl Figure of Nigeria. One of the most famous forms of Divination (Ifa) is practiced to explain misfortunes and help to prevent them. The Diviner, in consulting a Deity, manipulates sixteen palm nuts, reads the patterns they form and marks the results on a Divination Board sprinkled with wood dust. The marks indicate verses that should be chanted as prayers. The Bowls are used to hold kola nuts as offerings of Hospitality or as Receptacles for the sixteen sacred palm nuts used in Divination.
- Another reference for Ifa Divination is as follows:
- Such Bowls were essential for Rituals in which Fate or Prophecy (Ifa) was Divined. Ifa Divination was used to transcribe the Wisdom of Orisha Orunmila, the Spirit of Wisdom, Divinity and Prophecy in Yoruba Mythology. A highly-trained Priest, the Babalawo, taps rhythmically on a Ritual Tray (the Opon Ifa) with a Tapper (the Iroke Ifa) to invoke the presence of Orisha Orunmila. A Divination Bowl such as this example is used to contain the Sixteen Sacred Palm Nuts (Ikins), which must have at least Three ‘Eyes’.
- During the Divination Ritual, the Diviner divides the Nuts between his hands. The Nuts left in the original hand, desirably one or two, are counted and marked. As the Divination proceeds, the Diviner continues to mark single or double marks in wood powder spread on his Divination Tray until one of the 256 Recognised Odus is created. (An Odus is a set of accepted Traditional Binary Patterns or Codes that have evolved over thousands of years of observation and prediction. They provide guidance on both the everyday and the spiritual.)
According to Yoruba Mythology, the warthog was the most beautiful creature of the all animals at the time of creation. Its head was decorated with gems. However, the gods were disgusted by the warthog’s habits, his rooting around in the mud, and so on. They replaced the gems with warts and the gems were entrusted to the python instead.
The python, which symbolises the rainbow, safeguarded the gems by burying them at the point where the rainbow meets the earth. The warthog threatened to kill the python, but still he did not return the gems. Incensed, the gods sent messenger deities (the eshu) in the form of hunters to protect the python. This bowl is a clear reference to this story, with the hunters representing the eshu who are attempting to rescue the python from the warthog.
Today, the Yoruba people form one of the largest tribes in west Africa. They number around 30 million and are predominant in Nigeria where they comprise 21 per cent of the population. Most Yoruba speak the Yoruba language. Today, 60 per cent are Christians and another 30 per cent are Muslims. But many, especially in rural areas, still practise old Yoruba traditions such as those based around ifa.

Simplistic and Inappropriate
Format: Paperback
I was hoping this book would provide insights into how to present complex information in a more comprehensible, useful format, using PowerPoint as the tool. Instead, the overall gist of this book is that presentations should be "dumbed down" as much as possible. The theme the author presents is that presentations should be story based. This is reasonable. However, the method the author recommends is that essentially *all* meaningful, complex (or, as the author prefers "boring") content be removed from the presentation. Presentations then become nothing more than catchy headlines and colorful graphics. All content should be in the presenter's notes (not typically to be provided). This is juvenile and useless and frankly reflects a complete lack of understanding of how presentations are made in a complex business environment.

On the right track
Format: Paperback
This book is a good introduction about how to use story-telling techniques in PowerPoint presentations. There are some good ideas here that you won't find in technical manuals. If you don't know film techniques these will be eye-opening. But the book could have been much stronger if it were to push these concepts to the next level. I saw a PowerPoint presentation with Andy Goodman, who teaches more or less the same thing, and his presentation nailed these concepts more cleanly than this book does. But again, this book is definitely worth checking out if you haven't studied storytelling before.

An Essential
Format: Paperback
I've created PowerPoints for executives in major corporations and national non-profits for years now, and this is one of the first books I suggest anyone who needs to create their own PowerPoint look to. Beyond Bullet points is accessable enough that the novice PowerPoint user can understand what's going on and use the lessons in his or her next presentation; it's also detailed and challenging enough that even an old salt like me can find things to learn and do. Don't be another person who stands on stage reading their PowerPoint, and don't let reading your slides distract the audience from your presentation; follow the suggestions in this book and wow your audience.

Essential reading for PowerPoint presenters.
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Cliff shows details how to improve our PowerPoint presentations. He gives concrete and simple steps to transform a message into a targeted presentation. All of us have suffered from presenters who went over their allotted time because they had vital information to give us, yet we still didn't know their main point. Many have seen slide decks burdened with dozens of bullet points. Did the volume of points yield more clarity or did they dull our ability to focus on the message? Probably not. Read Cliff's book. Follow his method and you'll be a more effective presenter.
